In a bid to boost tourism, Paris Council is hoping to persuade residents to open up their spare rooms for visitors to the city.
The French capital has a reputation as not only being romantic and luxurious but also expensive and this move is an effort to change people’s perception into understanding that the city is also cheap, cheerful and friendly.
The Council hope to attract visitors who might otherwise be put off visiting the city by the belief that accommodation is expensive and the locals unwelcoming. They hope to promote a more personal and friendly service with homeowners providing useful information and helpful advice to guests.
The accommodation must pass certain criteria which the council have set, including providing a bed that is no less than 140cm by 190cm and a bathroom that is in pristine condition and perfectly clean. Homeowners must also provide a substantial breakfast that is “served with care.”
So far around 600 of an estimated 1000 people have taken the council up on the idea, perhaps persuaded by the 71% tax allowance and, of course, the extra income.
