Explore History in the Old Town

Stroll Along the Promenade
Down by the front you’ll find six kilometres of pedestrianised promenade that’s perfect for a relaxing stroll. Along the promenade, you’ll encounter some of the very best swimming spots in all of Montenegro, with the calm waters providing the ideal place to cool down from the hot sun.
The promenade is officially named Setalište Pet Danica after five young women who died during World War Two, and it follows the route of a former train line that once linked the coast to Sarajevo. In certain places, it even passes through tunnels that have been carved through the headland.
Should you find yourself getting a little warm in the summer months, you’ll find plenty of cafes, bars and restaurants lining the promenade that allow you to stop and take in the stunning scenery.
Enjoy Mud Therapy in Igalo
Should you stroll down to the very end of the promenade, you’ll reach Igalo, which is famed for its abundance of healing sea mud and sand, as well as its mineral-water springs.
A number of local health centres offer treatments if you’d like to be pampered by professionals. However, if you sit by and watch closely, many of the locals will show you exactly how they wade through the sand and mud to get the full experience. They also say that you should combine the sand and mud with sunbathing for the best effects, so all you have to do is relax while your body heals itself.
Visit the Savina Monastery
Named after the founder of the Serbian Orthodox Church, the Savina Monastery is a relaxing retreat away from the Old Town. Located towards the east of the town, its hilltop location also provides perfect panoramas of the beautiful bay below.
The monastery itself contains three churches that were built gradually over several hundred years and holds relics originating from the time of the Nemanjic dynasty. As well as this, the monastery also holds several parchments and gospels.
Take a Trip to Kanli Kula Fortress
For the most impressive views of the town, head to Kanli Kula fortress, which also doubles as an open-air theatre in the summer months, when musical and theatrical performances are held. There’s a small entrance fee to get inside the fortress, but the views from up there are priceless.
The fortress itself has a bloody past, and once served as a prison during Turkish rule. The name Kanli Kula itself translates as ‘bloody tower’. As testament to this, you can see the dungeons where the inmates were held while you visit.
Hike Around Mount Orjen and its Surroundings
Standing at 1,894 metres, Mount Orjen overshadows the town and all of the surrounding areas. If you head to the town bus station, you’ll soon discover red and white markings that form hiking trails.
This area marks the start of a hiking path that stretches as far as Lovcen, Lake Skadar, Mount Rumija and Bar. On Mount Orjen itself, you’ll find over 60km of marked trails, with options to suit all levels of experience and skill. If you’re in doubt, a local mountaineering group are on hand to help, and guided tours also operate during the summer months.
