Sunny seaside town
Monastir finds itself along the east coast of Tunisia, about a third of the way down. It’s perched on the central shore and sits in the Gulf of Hammamet on a peninsula.
Regarded as a popular stop off for those at sea, including the yacht crowd, this seaside destination is the place to be if you’re looking for cosy cafes and traditional restaurants. There’s so much on offer that you’ll be lost for words most of the time, especially when you discover the culture and the history of some of the buildings.

Lessons in history
Home to the Biblical backdrop of films such as Jesus of Nazareth and Life of Brian, the Ribat is a honey coloured fortress and stands tall as the town’s biggest historical monument. Previously the home to religious soldiers, this building is still in good condition and can be viewed visitors.
Monastir is also proud to show off the original walls and gates that used to loop around the town. The old medina has been reconstructed and revamped but the history remains. Monastir holidays offer you the chance to revel in history that is a must see for any traveller. Be sure to visit both the Ribat and some of the original walls and gates of the medina, these type once in a lifetime opportunities only happen once but the memories will last forever.
Endless eats and treats
Tunisian food, in general, is an endless supply of incredible flavours and spices. Pair this with the fact Monastir is a coastal town and has plenty of fish to offer and you’ve got an amazing combination. The fresh fish combined with local spices means you can eat a memorable meal in many restaurants across the coastal town.
Don’t worry if you’re not into spicy foods though, further down the marina you’ll find family friendly food that offers non-spicy food eaters a range of options. Choose from international restaurants and a host of pubs for evening drinks, and if you’re looking to let loose on the dance floor and party then be sure to head to Sousse for the party hotspot.
