A traditional Austrian market town
If you’re heading on holiday to Austria, St Johann is the place to be. Nestled in the wide Leukental Valley in the shadow of the majestic Kitzbüheler Horn, this picturesque village has a Friday farmers’ market where you can buy local delicacies such as speck and honey.
In keeping with the traditional market town feel, there’s a charming Baroque church and quaint town square lined with pretty cafes, shops and bakeries. They’re big on cafe culture in St Johann, so you’ll find ample places to stop and sit. Alternatively, take peaceful strolls beside the river which runs through the centre of town.
And for those who enjoy a spot of culture, the local galleries and museums are well worth a browse, such as the local heritage museum. As well as offering a laid-back vibe, the town also has plenty of activities and attractions waiting.
Action-packed attractions at every turn
One of the area’s top family adventures is the Panorama Badewelt leisure centre. Here, both children and adults are well catered for with a 25-metre indoor pool, a fun kids’ splash area with slides and a heated outdoor section boasting wonderful mountain views.
Not to mention the tranquil spa and wellness area – perfect for catching up on some serious R&R. Play indoor tennis, outdoor beach volleyball and badminton, or take the kids to the playground.
If you’re looking for mountain side wonders you can take the main cable car up into the Kitzbühel Alps, where the views are one-of-a-kind. And for rainy days there’s a large indoor climbing centre with a cafe and yoga classes at Koasa Boulder.
Over at Mountain High Adventure Centre get strapped in and try your hand at tandem paragliding. Depending on how brave you are,the instructor will either glide you down the mountainside or send you soaring like an acrobat – an experience you’ll never forget.
For something more subdued, you can visit the 300-year old Huber Bräu brewery to sample a selection of beers and admire the magnificent views from the 30-metre high tower.
A perfect base for exploring
Located between Innsbruck and Salzburg, an hour’s drive from Salzburg Airport, holidays in St Johann are well connected by local bus and rail links, making it the ideal base for exploring the wider area. With the Kitzbüheler Horn and the Wilder Kaiser mountain range just a stone’s throw away, the area’s enchanting landscape is ripe for outdoor explorations with miles of walking and cycling trails.
There are 210 kilometres of trails in the local area so it’s your choice whether to spend an hour or the entire day walking. Take a gentle stroll through the valley to nearby Kitzbühel, walk an hour and half to reach the Eifersbacher waterfalls, or hop on the Harschbichl gondola to tackle the high altitude mountain paths.
Another popular hiking destination is the Badesee Going bathing lake, at the foot of the Wilder Kaiser Mountains – this natural water source is an emerald green beauty.
If you’re keen to seek out further sightseeing opportunities, the neighbouring resort of Kitzbuhel has charming boutiques and Ellmau boasts a mountain top amusement park. The city of Innsbruck is easy to reach on the main bus and train routes, or venture a little further afield, you can be in Munich in Germany after only a few hours on the train.
