In the midst of the action
Close to its lively Bodrum neighbour – a 40-minute drive away – and yet with its own unique identity, Akyarlar shouldn’t be overlooked as a wonderful holiday destination. With a lively harbour from where you can charter a boat or book onto an organised excursion, this resort has plenty of activities to keep the whole family occupied.
This traditional fishing village has a stunning moon-shaped beach and you can rest assured that it doesn’t get too packed during the peak summer months, making this the ideal area to book cheap Bodrum holidays. There are a multitude of secret coves and beaches along this part of the peninsula, perfect for exploring or finding an idyllic spot to top up your tan.
Explore the marina and beyond
The marina is the best place to stop off if you want to hop aboard a boat and explore the peninsula. Options range from sailing in the open sea to heading north towards Camel beach where you can stop and ride on the animals, or finding a secluded bay to explore under the water by scuba diving.
Karaincir bay is also nearby, to the east of Akyarlar, and anyone looking for long sandy beaches and a remote spot to chill out will find the solution here. The water is always cool in this part of the Aegean, which is refreshing after dealing with temperatures on land that can rise up to the 40s.
You can even take a boat trip to the neighbouring Greek island of Kos or catch a trip to Burak. Excursions here last for five hours, but with plenty of stops for swimming and scuba diving, you’ll have a fantastic time.
Relaxing or exploring
Most of the hotel complexes have their own swimming pools and helter skelters, as well as a variety of activities such as water polo. If you want to head out for a day of a day of exploration without the kids in tow, childcare is often provided.
There are daily minibuses from Akyarlar which provide easy access to Bodrum City and Turgutreis. If you’re looking for an action packed day then either of these two local resorts can provide plenty of entertainment, and both hold arts festivals, which are always excellent fun.
Market trade
Akyarlar has a weekly market where you can stock up on some fantastic fresh local produce if you’re planning a picnic or a day out on the boat. Alternatively, you could opt for some more unusual gift choices. Cotton and lace goods are popular, and a beautifully handcrafted pashmina could make a fantastic souvenir to take home with you.
Village delights
Although catering for holidaymakers, Akyarlar has also managed to retain its quaint village atmosphere. Simply wandering around the harbour and selecting a local restaurant to enjoy the evening meal is about as active as it gets here, but that’s not a problem. You’ll find some excellent eating establishments in and around the marina.
Fresh seafood dominates most menus – after all, the village is right on the sea. But you’ll be able to indulge in a whole range of other tasty Turkish specialities while enjoying your meal and gazing out to sea. Some restaurants serve traditional Turkish fare with an amazing range of sticky, sweet desserts. And, if you like an accompaniment of live music to your meal, you can find it in many restaurants around town.
With its calm shallow water, a secluded beach and access to all sorts of activities, Akyarlar really is an amazing destination for all ages. This wonderful resort with its picturesque village and its awesome views over the sea is waiting to be discovered.
