Enjoy Alte's natural charm
For people who enjoy destinations where life unfolds at a leisurely pace, Alte holidays are a dream come true. The village couldn’t be more typical of this region and as you walk around its narrow, cobbled streets, it feels as if time has mostly stood still for years.
Alte really is as pretty as a picture, with colourful plants and trees around every corner, looking lovely against the white-washed houses. Some of the bars, cafés and restaurants are even covered in attractive foliage, giving them their unique character.
Even more stunning is the tucked-away spot that you’ll discover at the eastern end of the village. Two natural springs are the focal point, with a series of walkways and bridges to help you get up closer. You can sit right next to the water in the beautifully-maintained gardens and enjoy a picnic.
Kids will enjoy the Blue-Flag beaches
The sea is never far away on your Alte holidays, with the coastal city of Albufeira and its Blue Flag sandy stretches just a 30-minute drive away.
One of the most popular beaches here is Praia dos Pescadores, also known as the Fisherman’s Beach, which is part of Albufeira’s past as a former fishing village. Local fishermen still use the marina, however, and there are also activities such as boat trips, diving and dolphin watching to be had here.
The sand at Praia dos Pescadores is a beautiful golden shade and is the ideal beach for the little ones to play on. It gently slopes into the calm sea, so getting into the water for swimming is easy and safe. There’s also a great choice of beach-side bars and restaurants serving up local fish and seafood.
Have a splashing time at Aqualand
There are many parks in the Algarve region for families with children to enjoy, and holidays to Alte provide easy access to several of them. One of Europe’s largest water parks, Aqualand Algarve, is less than 30 minutes away by car. It features a huge range of slides, rides, pools, and even a beach area with a wave pool.
Just 10 minutes down the road from Aqualand Algarve is Zoomarine Algarve. As well as having a great water park, it also features one of the marine variety too. Some of the animals that call this park home include many colourful tropical birds and birds of prey. There’s also an aquarium where you can see sharks and various fish, plus dolphin, sea lion and seal shows run throughout the day.
Pop over to Portimão
The village is ideally located for easy travel to many other picturesque and interesting places. One of the must-visit places for a day trip is Portimão. This port city has a wonderful historic quarter and a lively marina where you’ll find boats heading out on dolphin-spotting trips.
The top sightseeing highlights include the Museu de Portimão, a museum housed in a 19th-century former sardine-canning factory.
The Church of Nossa Senhora da Conceição is also well worth the uphill walk to where it overlooks the city. This stunning Gothic-style building features some beautiful, traditional azulejo tiles on its interior and is very attractive on the outside too.
