A day at the beach
Lake Como is one of Italy’s most celebrated jewels and the main draw for those visiting Cadenabbia. To make the most of the lake views, there’s a selection of sand and pebble beaches dotted around the banks – perfect for a relaxing day by the water.
Just a few minutes walk along the promenade you’ll find the popular Lido di Cadenabbia beach bar, where you can enjoy a refreshing drink and sunbathe on the sandy shores. There’s also a spacious swimming pool, garden area and a restaurant serving tasty seafood dishes.
If you fancy going further afield during your holiday to Italy, the neighbouring town of Menaggio has a man-made sand beach with a friendly bar and restaurant. Grab a sunlounger, bring a good book and soak up the breathtaking views.
Fascinating history
Steeped in history, Cadenabbia was once a pit-stop where boatmen would come to rest while transporting produce across Lake Como. It’s also home to one of the first Anglican churches in Italy, which was built in 1891 and is well worth a visit to marvel at the decorative interior and learn about its interesting past.
If you’re looking to immerse yourself in Italian culture, a day trip to one of the area’s historic villas is a must. Just a short walk down from Cadenabbia promenade and you’ll come across Villa Carlotta, which has a fascinating museum filled with paintings, sculptures and a glorious botanical garden. You can also take a guided boat tour to the 18th century Villa Balbianello and explore its famous gardens.
Popular walking routes
The lush landscapes and balmy climate make the Como region ideal for walking during the summer. A good place to start is with a gentle stroll along Cadenabbia promenade to watch the boats glide across the water. Another popular lakeside route is the Antica Strada Regina, which stretches all the way from Cadenabbia to Colonno.
There’s plenty of interesting towns to explore along the way, as well as a handful of waterfront cafés, where you can stop off for a mid-route ice cream or espresso.
For panoramic views, head inland behind the village and walk along the wooded trails that incline towards Griante. Here, you can saunter around the town’s narrow alleys and ancient buildings, or visit the San Martino church which is perched on a rugged hill overlooking the lake and mountains.
Eating and drinking
Cadenabbia has a good selection of restaurants both inland and by the lake. If you’re looking for a true taste of Italy, there’s a plenty of traditional lakeside eateries serving regional dishes such as pasta and fish. For more choice, wander down the promenade to Tremezzo or in the opposite direction to Griante.
Although nightlife is limited, some of the larger hotels have lively bars where you can enjoy pre-dinner cocktails with views of the lake. On Friday evenings, the Vecchia Torre Bar often has karaoke and live music with a vibrant atmosphere. Just a couple minutes walk from the centre of Cadenabbia is the popular Bisbino Cafe, which also has live music throughout the week.
For something a little different during your Italian holiday, Villa Carlotta hosts regular events and festivals throughout the summer, including music concerts and opera evenings.
