With a laid-back vibe and varied activities, there’s plenty of things to do here. You could spend a happy morning simply walking the 600-metre Carvoeiro boardwalk that snakes over the rocks beside the shore – it’s free and the views from here are stunning. If this activity seems a little tame, then the Slide and Splash amusement park is only a 12-minute drive away. Enjoy an exhilarating ride on the Big Wave or watch a live falconry show, this venue has amusements that will entertain the whole family.

If you head down to Algar Seco, just a 10-minute drive away, you’ll encounter some dramatic rock formations and exciting caves. This is a place to relish adventure. There’s also a handy cafe bar halfway down the cliffs if you’re in need of refreshment.

Fulfil your sporting ambitions

There’s a kite surfing centre at nearby Alvor, just 25 minutes away, but Carvoeiro is really popular for its range of boating trips and proximity to some of Portugal’s finest golf courses. There’s also Tivoli Diving, based at the Tivoli Almansor hotel in the centre of town where you can learn how to dive under the watchful eye of the school’s trained instructors.

Imagine some of your favourite golfing greens and some of the courses close to Carvoeiro will probably spring to mind. Pestana Golfe resort is an eight minute drive away and Vale de Milho is even closer. Vale de Milho has been designed for golfers of all ages. Set in an exquisite lansdscape, surrounded by luscious tropical trees, this venue invites you to capture the ever-elusive ‘hole in one.’

Gastronomic delights

Carvoeiro punches well above its weight when it comes to its range of restaurants and bars. This resort loves karaoke, and if your idea of a good time is singing in public then you’ve picked the right place. There are jazz bars that are open until the small hours, English pubs as well as a nightclub on the beach and some authentic Portuguese bars.

Then there’s the food and drink. As Carvoeiro is on the coast you can expect to savour some fantastic lobsters and fresh sardines. From Michelin star restaurants, such as the excellent Bon Bon, to small family run establishments, you may well be astonished by the range of restaurants here. Carvoeiro used to be a tuna fishing village before the growth in tourism, and fresh tuna is a local speciality.

As Portugal is a wine producing country, it would almost amount to a crime to leave the country without sampling the local produce. Port comes from here too – and there’s nothing better than rounding off a wonderfully tasting meal with a delicious glass of fine quality port.

Extraordinary celebrations

In and around Carvoeiro each year are a number of celebrations where you can experience a bit of Portuguese culture and hospitality. The last Sunday in August is the festival of ‘Our Lady of Incarnation’ which comes complete with music, food and wine. As well as processions and fireworks, the fiesta reaches a grand finale with a big celebration on the beach.

If you’re lucky enough to be in the Algarve in June, then Lagoa is the home of the annual Algarve Fair. This event is a fantastic opportunity to catch some live entertainment, sample lots of regional cooking and see examples of traditional crafts and activities. There’s even a dog show that’ll appeal to all canine lovers.

You probably never thought that you’d have a fun time at a snail festival. Strange as this concept might sound, Porches hosts a gastronomic fiesta based around snails in July, that has a dedicated following each year.
