Take a breath in Fanes
Fanes is all about connecting with nature, enjoying wonderful tranquil walks along the beach, and exploring the village itself along with the surrounding countryside – a complete contrast to the more vibrant Rhodes Town, only 30 minutes away. With fantastic scenery and access to local wildlife parks – as well as a village-based arts centre and bespoke crafts shop – a holiday in Fanes will give you the opportunity to really chill out and recharge your batteries.
A step back in time
Fanes is also known as ‘the village of colours’, thanks to the fact that most of its houses are painted in a variety of vibrant and pastel hues following a 2011 arts project. Just spending an afternoon wandering around the village’s beautiful winding streets will soon act to de-stress you from the worries of 21st-century living.
Don't forget the food
Whether you’re considering All Inclusive holidays to Rhodes or fancy doing your own thing, one of the joys of staying in a relaxing resort is chilling out during the day and then having a sumptuous meal at night. The restaurants in and around Fanes have a wide range of specialities on their menu – from refreshing dandelion salad at Psinthos restaurant, in the nearby national park, to traditional taverna fare of mixed grills, gyros and baklava in Fanes itself. Freshly prepared food at To Kyma – right on Fanes’ harbour – is always welcome and many of those staying at Fanes’ holiday resorts frequent this charming venue.
To the west of Fanes lies The Little Greek Kitchen. If you love the local cuisine, then spend a day learning cooking techniques here so you can wow your friends back home with your new skills and tempt them with some delicious Greek recipes.
In search of nature
If you ever wanted to experience a magical rural treat then this destination – around a half-hour drive from Fanes – might do the trick. With its stunning layout of paths, streams and woodland all cultivated to encourage butterflies to settle in this dreamlike habitat, you’ll enjoy a peaceful and relaxing time just strolling along and communing with nature.
There’s an ostrich farm and park about 15 minutes by car from the butterflies. This the place to visit if you’ve always longed to pet one of these curious creatures. You can sample ostrich meat in the centre’s restaurant as well as buy decorated ostrich eggs in the farm shop.
Kite-surfing and other beach sports
The Meltemi Kite club is based on Fanes’ beach and is the best place to go and hire your gear before you ascend to the skies. The centre has experienced instructors who will help you learn the essentials or simply refresh your skills. The winds can be strong on this side of the island so you’ll have no problems enjoying this fantastic sport. The centre does have its own rescue boat in case of accidents.
Art in the village
Lovers of shopping can indulge in some retail therapy in Fanes. The Mikres Dimiourgies shop and craft centre prides itself on the originality of its stock, and is the place to come for hand-crafted chandeliers, original jewellery, and leather goods. This tiny emporium also stocks some wonderful clothes and attractive sandals.
Enjoy the village’s unspoilt beaches and take a walk either to the west or east of Fanes to explore the rest of this relaxing and tranquil area. It’ll revitalise your senses and renew your energies in a gentle escape from the cares of the world.
