The heart of Hvar

Its main resort, Hvar Town is one of the most beautiful places in Croatia and has so much to offer. Arriving into its yacht-filled harbour onto the buzzing waterfront you’ll notice its cobble-stoned streets are oozing with five star hotels, lively cocktail bars and al-fresco restaurants serving the tastiest Dalmatian delicacies.

Taking centre stage is the historical St Stephens Square – originally formed by filling in an inlet that reached out from the bay, its white-polished stone stretches all the way from the harbour through to another magnificent landmark – the cathedral. If you’re a history fan, rest assured knowing that Hvar has plenty of momentous sites to see.

Overlooking the excitement of the town and its terracotta rooftops is the medieval castle – Fortica. Perched up high on a steep hill there’s no surprise that this is a popular tourist spot- its panoramic views of the seaside promenade and surrounding islets are definitely worth the hike up.

Low-key luxury

Although Hvar Town steals most of the limelight, there’s so much to see beyond it. Hvar is an island full of fragrance and colour – expect lavender coated fields, vineyards and olive trees. As for man-made beauty there’s northern coastal towns – Stari Grad and Jelsa – both just as charming, yet far lower key.

Founded by the Greeks in 400BC – Stari Grad is the oldest town in Croatia and one of the oldest places in Europe. Rich in history, its churches and palaces curve around a pretty bay. Plus, right on its edge is Stari Grad Plain – UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Surrounded by the islands highest pine-forest peaks you’ll find Jelsa – a quiet little place sitting at the foot of another pretty bay. It has all of the expected touristy stuff- cafes, restaurants and souvenir stores yet its minimal crowds make it feel much more intimate. As for beaches – it is home to some of the island’s best, including its only genuine sandy beach.

Croatia's coolest clubbing destination

When it comes to Croatia nightlife, Hvar has a reputation as the number one clubbing destination. Attracting the rich and famous to its beach and waterfront, its nightspots have opened their doors to Prince Harry, Beyoncé and Jay-Z to name a few.

Carpe Diem Hvar is the star of the show- a nightclub on its very own island- Marinkovac. Its peak summer season runs from June to September and is definitely worth checking out. You can catch a water taxi from the port and enjoy a night partying with some of the world’s best DJ’s.

The rest of Hvar’s nightlife revolves around its old town. Here you can swap the daytime siestas for a Pina Colada in a Bali inspired setting at Hula Hula Beach Bar – the islands best sunset spot. Or head up for a hilltop, open-air disco at Club Veneranda – set in a hillside Venetian fortress, you’ll have a night that goes down in history, literally.

An island hoppers paradise

When holidaying in Hvar it is likely that you won’t want to leave the island itself, but with the archipelago surrounding it’s hard not to hop on a boat for the day. An island-hopper’s paradise – the Pakleni Islands are a true wonder of nature – each one has its own quirks and qualities but they all share translucent turquoise waters, secluded coves and amazing snorkel spots.
