Fine sands and warm sea
As soon as you get off the plane and feel that wonderful wave of heat, you know you’ve made a good choice of holiday. Incekum, which means ‘fine sands’ in Turkish, is close to Antalya airport and with a good coastal road, it’s a smooth ride to your destination.
This beach resort offers a golden sandy beach and clear sapphire sea with plenty of watersports opportunities. It’s a laid-back area, where the hotels and beach offer prime sunbathing opportunities, interspersed with a bit of shopping in Incekum centre. But if you’re looking for a bit more, it’s just a short hop to some of the other wonderful attractions the Antalya region has to offer.
Watersports galore
If you’ve never been diving and would like to try with your family, then this is the right spot for you. Supervised tuition in Incekum is available for kids as young as eight, and you can expect to see some great marine life in the Mediterranean including turtles, starfish and seahorses alongside octopuses, seals and dolphins. You may even lucky enough to see them popping their heads above the water.
Look out for sponges too, which is a major industry for Turks in this region. Great as a gift or for yourself, robust natural sea sponges are purported to last a lifetime and are nothing like you would ever buy in the UK.
Incekum is also the location of the largest fun park on the Turkish Riviera, Water Planet. Surrounded by forest with views to the sea, there are plenty of waterslides and rafting opportunities as well as bungee jumping.
Surrounding attractions
If you’re feeling adventurous, public transport is great here so head to Alanya, a larger resort that sits on a peninsula below the Taurus Mountains. It’s a great location to visit not least for its history – given its position it has been the stronghold for numerous Mediterranean empires including the Roman, Byzantine and Ottoman Empires. The area’s most significant period came in the 13th century under the rule of the Seljuks and Alaeddin Kayqubad – from where the name of the area is derived.
Alaeddin can also take credit for building some of the most famous landmarks here including the fantastic Alanya Castle which was built on the remains of Roman Byzantine fortifications. About 150 towers, including the famous Red Tower, punctuate this double-walled citadel. Located 250-metres high on a rocky peninsula, the castle is a home to a Museum. From here you can also enjoy beautiful views of the town as well as miles of wonderful coastline.
On the other side of Incekum is an ancient port called Side, famous for its ruins, including the remains of a 2nd-century theatre. If you’re looking for fantastic views, the imposing columns of a Hellenistic Temple still stand in their rightful position overlooking the Mediterranean.
Boat trips
There really isn’t a better way to enjoy the Turkish Riviera than by taking a trip on a traditional wooden Turkish boat. A full day’s excursion from nearby Avasallar will include a chance to see Alanya Castle from another angle, while also having the opportunity to discover three caves.
The first is the famed Phosphorus Cave, its geological structure means its glows like phosphorus, something that’s also visible in daylight. Next, the Maiden’s Cave where pirates used to haul up their captive females and finally, the Lover’s Cave. If you’re lucky enough to get the opportunity, it’s a memorable place to go for a swim.
Transport can be organised from your hotel and you can expect refreshments, snacks and music on-board, just to add to the relaxed vibe of this impressive excursion.
Entertainment and eating
Luckily the 4* and 5* hotels in the area provide a great array of entertainment and with Turkey holiday packages providing All Inclusive catering, meals won’t be a worry either. If you do want to go out to eat, head for the high street where you’ll find a number of restaurants to suit your every whim.
