Mixing the old with the new

Spending your Santorini holidays in Kamari means you’ll never be bored, whatever your interests. Whether your idea of holiday fun is to stretch out on a beach and take in the sun or expend your energy in vigorous watersports, you’ll soon discover that Kamari has plenty of activities that’ll keep you occupied all day and all night.

This is also the destination where you can really expect to find the unexpected. Kamari’s Blue Flag beach is black, courtesy of the volcanic eruption that created Santorini many thousands of years ago, covering much of the area in black molten ash. Thankfully Kamari beach’s black pebbles are only hot as a result of the sun and not due to any current volcanic activity.

You’ll find the ruins of a city that dates back almost 3,000 years within a stone’s throw of contemporary Kamari. The town’s promenade is now home to an eclectic selection of modern shops, restaurants and bars.

Ancient Thira

Just nine minutes away by car – and well worth the drive – lie the ruins of ancient Thira. Even if you’re not a great fan of history, an early-morning trip to this destination will reward you with stunning views over the headland, as well as a genuine feeling of stepping back in time as you explore the city’s ancient streets. Byzantine wall-paintings, bath-houses and the remains of a large, 1,500 capacity theatre are just a few of the delights in store at ancient Thira.

By the sea

As well as spending some time on Kamari beach, you can take a trip on the water taxi along the coast to Perissa. Or spread your wings – or rather your arms and legs – and enjoy a day at the Volcanic Dive Centre, situated on the beach. Both non-divers and those with experience are welcome. The qualified instructors are eager to share all the mysteries that lie at the bottom of the sea.

Activities on dry land

You don’t have to be a water baby in order to find things to do in Kamari. There’s the excellent Escape Land where you can down a cocktail or two, play pool, or try your hand at bowling, while being entertained by the centre’s DJ.

Should you wish to have some fun while exercising your brain, the Kamari Escape Room is the place for you. Escape Rooms are growing in popularity all over the world and the one at Kamari offers excitement and the opportunity to indulge in some problem-solving so you can be released from the room.

Feeding the body

After you’ve fed your mind it’s time to concentrate on the less cerebral things in life. Kamari’s juice bar is the place to rehydrate and Kamari has a plentiful supply of restaurants to unwind and people-watch in as well as try some delicious food.

Some of these are situated right on the beach, and the fish restaurants are exceptional. Others are just a short distance away on Kamari’s main promenade. Dimitris Taverna is the place to be for Greek dancing, music and a fine selection of organically-produced Greek food.

Party on

Holidays to Santorini are all about letting go, which comes in handy as Kamari is famed for its nightlife. From flamboyant cocktail bars to live music venues, the plentiful bars and clubs by the beach conjure up images of other party islands. Kamari’s Dom Club constantly tops the list for the best nightclub on the island and guest DJs are a regular feature.

Retail therapy

Leaving Kamari without spending some time indulging in shopping is almost criminal. From local ceramics to upmarket souvenirs, the shops on Kamari’s main promenade have a wide variety of goods on offer. Jewellery and leather goods are of a high quality and relatively inexpensive, especially if you haggle.
