A scenic place to relax and play
Set among pine-covered hills, Katelios has a series of fine-sand beaches. Other than lying on the beaches, activities include heading out for country walks, or taking a boat trip round the island for the day. The village has a fishing tradition and you can try the wonderful fresh fish in the evenings, and a tipple or two in the town’s restaurants.
Should you fancy something a little more lively on your holidays to Greece, Dreams Bar has you covered through the day and into the evening with its fun beach-shack decor, and top-quality quirky cocktails. For venues that open until late, head to nearby Skala for a greater selection of bars and a nightclub.
A scintillating beach
Katelios beach is clean and probably one of the most picturesque in all of Kefalonia. The beach isn’t particularly touristy so it’s not usually too busy, and there are lush green hills and pine trees providing a backdrop to the white sand. The beach also has some nice tavernas and cafes beside it, like Cozy Cafe and Bar which serves food for breakfast and lunch.
Sample the restaurants
The dining culture in Katelios is quite relaxed and, thanks to the village’s fishing heritage, centres on seafood. Maria’s Taverna offers that classic Greek taverna experience, with some of the very best fish dishes around. Places like Captain Jerry’s do fish equally well, whilst Jerry’s Eleniko provides live music and friendly service on top of a broad Mediterranean menu.6
You can still get your hands on British cuisine in restaurants like Nemesis. And those who like to sample fine dining can try the high-class Greek cooking at Rosebud Bistro and Katelios Taverna.
Head to the bars
In the hills there is a wonderful bar called Dreams that is styled like a beach shack complete with an open terrace. Here you can drink anything from cocktails and beers to milkshakes. They also serve food like the Dime Bar cheesecake.
There isn’t a thriving nightlife scene in the village. If you’re after a more hip and happening evening, head to Skala, where there are a lot of bars, tavernas and restaurants to choose from along the main street. You could also head to the most popular nightclub, Spilio, on the road to Poros whilst you’re there.
Go for a walk
If you’re up for a bit of activity, you can take long walks along the many different trails around Katelios. Some take you through lemon and olive groves or into the lush green hills, while others stay close to the beaches.
Down by the river there’s a walkway shaded by trees where you can find wonderful rare plants, birds and turtles, as well old windmills and medieval churches.
A little bit of shopping
There isn’t loads of shopping to be done in Katelios, bar a few minimarts and gift shops. If you do fancy a big shopping spree, head to Argostoli where there are many boutiques and shops, that open late on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays.
Watersports and more
You can try fishing down at the rocks at the end of Agia Varvara beach, but if you want to get involved with watersports, the best place to head is Skala. In Skala, you can sample windsurfing and scuba diving, as well as paragliding and pedalos. There are also night-time turtle-watching groups.
Environmental festival
If you’re a fan of turtles, or helping to save nature, there’s an annual event in Katelios that could be right up your street. It’s run by the Katelios Group, that protects the local turtle population, and takes places during the second weekend of August.
The event is all about raising money and awareness to the plight of the local turtle population, but it’s also a fun day out. Think quizzes, treasure hunts, sports, and guided walks to the nesting sights.
Where to go nearby
One great place to head to if you’re in Katelios is Ithaca. Ithaca is a beautiful island within sailing reach of Kefalonia. It boasts a mountainous, untouched and relaxed take on Greek island life.
Take a boat over to the island and you can explore the capital, Vathi, with its wonderful tavernas and semi-circle harbour. Or head to Kioni, with its simply gorgeous port and charming houses dotted around.
