Stepping back in time

Krk Island has been inhabited for thousands of years, and remains of prehistoric settlements are scattered across the island. It was colonised by the Romans several millennia ago; they built a fortified town to keep out invaders. The walls and gates of this ancient settlement circle the historic district of Krk Town, a labyrinth of stone houses with terracotta roofs. Marvel over the majestic Frankopan Castle, where the rooms are filled with ancient artefacts, and there is a fabulous view of the city from the ramparts. During the summer, outdoor concerts and shows are often held here.

The island is populated by many other ancient and medieval settlements, each with their own unique atmosphere and history. Step back in time when you visit the tiny islet of little island of Košljun, where you’ll discover lush gardens and a Benedictine monastery. There’s an outstanding collection of artefacts in the monastery library, including rare maps and tablets written in ancient scripts.

Beautiful beaches

During the balmy summer months, you’ll want to spend most of your time on the beach. Krk Island won’t disappoint – it offers both pebbled and sandy beaches of all sizes. One of the most popular is Vela Beach, in Baška, which stretches for more than a mile along the turquoise waters of the Adriatic. It’s lined with cafés and restaurants, and the shallow water makes it a perfect place to take small children.

If you’re looking for something a little quieter, there are plenty of secluded coves tucked into Krk Island’s coastline. Try Oprna Beach near Stara Baška. This bijou bay can only be reached by boat or by footpath.

Soline Bay is also worth a visit. There are spots where you can dig down under the sand to unearth mineral-rich mud, renowned for its healing properties. It’s not uncommon to see people covered from head to toe in mud, walking down to the ocean to wash themselves clean.

Fantastic water sports

Despite its serene appearance, Krk Island is the perfect destination for families and friends looking for a more action-packed holiday. There are so many different water sports to try that there’ll never be a dull moment. Try flyboarding at Nijivice or parasailing at Malinska. At Wakeboarding Center Krk, near Kornic, even complete beginners can stand on a board and whizz across the water, pulled by a series of cables. Smaller kids will prefer the Aqua Park at Vela Beach, which has an inflatable obstacle course and several slides.

There’s also a lot to see under the water. The transparent seas around the island are perfect for snorkelling and scuba diving. Dive clubs organise excursions where you can view colourful marine life and underwater shipwrecks. One of the most famous is the Peltastis, which stands upright on the seabed, the captain’s cabin and its fearsome cannons still intact.

Amazing nightlife

Krk Island has a tasteful yet energetic nightlife, with atmospheric bars and upmarket clubs – many of them found in Krk Town. Volsonis is one of the town’s liveliest bars, situated in a local house where an ancient altar of Venus was discovered underground. It has a gorgeous garden terrace, offers great cocktails and cool DJ sets. Casa del Padrone is a well-heeled party spot, located in a villa beside the beach, with a romantic view of the harbour.

Outside of Krk, there are lots of traditional taverns serving local wine, as well as lively clubs lining the more popular beaches. Porto Club, on Vela Beach, is one of the most popular. Like several venues on the island, it’s only open during summer. If you come during the off-season, make sure you research what’s open before you head out drinking and dancing.
