Enjoy the beautiful beach
Holidays in Mai Khao are heavenly for those wanting to escape busy crowds and enjoy the peace and quiet of this idyllic island. Part of Sirinat National Park, Mai Khao Beach is practically untouched. The surrounding Andaman Sea is bright blue and inviting – though between May and November, swimming can be dangerous. Once a year during the Songkran Festival, visitors can watch baby turtles being released into the sea. You can even sponsor and help the baby turtles make their journey. From Mai Khao Beach, it’s easy to get to Nai Yang Beach too.
Visit Phang Nga Bay
Holidays to Mai Khao are perfectly placed to visit the stunning Phang Nga Bay. The distinctive limestone rocks that jut from the mesmerising emerald waters are one of the most popular attractions in Thailand. In the bay, you can visit Koh Panyee and James Bond Island – two of the most sought-after spots. Though it can get crowded, beat the busy areas by taking a leisurely boat ride from the northern side of Phuket – these often include several stops at secluded coves where you can swim and sunbathe. Koh Ta Pu had a starring role in The Man With the Golden Gun, and it’s worth visiting for a photo opportunity.
Samet Nangshe Viewpoint should be another destination on your list. It sits on a hilltop and provides gorgeous, panoramic views across the bay. If you go at night, you can even see the Milky Way!
Eat great food
Holidays in Mai Khao come with some fabulous restaurants with lovely views. You can choose from authentically cooked, traditional Thai cuisine, fresh seafood that’s caught on the day, and a range of European dishes too. The northern end of Mai Khao Beach has some rustic restaurants that serve up well-priced dishes or you can opt for more fancy establishments. Sea.Fire.Salt is a sophisticated restaurant with sea views that specialises in barbecued foods. The SALA Phuket Restaurant is perfect for romantic meals, while the Black Ginger Phuket sits on an island in the middle of a lagoon.
Get back to nature
On Mai Khao Beach is the Mai Khao Marine Turtle Foundation. It’s part of the JW Marriott Resort and protects wild turtles as well as the beaches and seas. You don’t need to be a guest at the resort to visit, so it’s worth spending some of your Mai Khao holidays discovering what the Foundation does for these brilliant animals. You can learn all about the local turtles, their ecosystem and how the local people protect them. You can even meet some of the resident turtles and help feed them! You should also spend some time in the town’s parks – one even has its own waterfall you can cool off in.
Get your adrenaline racing
Whether you’re going on Mai Khao holidays with your family, partner or friends, you should pay a visit to two attractions that are sure to get your adrenaline up! The International Wake Park, just outside Mai Khao is the best place to learn how to wakeboard. You can pick up the skills in the warm, safe Thai waters – and admire views of the diverse landscape from the ocean. It’s one of the best wakeboard parks in the world, though you can also try paddle boarding, kayaking and swimming – as well as relaxing in the steam rooms. The other attraction to visit is the KidzSole Flying Trapeze. Try everything from flying on the trapeze at high speeds, to tackling the obstacle course – filled with 40 challenges.
Ride the biggest waterslides
Every holidaymaker in Mai Khao should head to the Splash Jungle Water Park. It’s a great day out for the whole family, with 12 waterslides, rides and attractions. Safety comes first in this water park, with lifeguards on duty at all times. You’ll rarely have to queue for anything in Splash Jungle, so you can spend the whole day enjoying the rides and relaxing by the pools. One of the park’s most popular rides is the Lazy River, which lets you float around on an inflatable tube. On the other end of the spectrum is the Boomerango. You’ll whizz down a steep drop then free fall into a splashdown pool! Little ones will love the Aquarium and Slide Pool too.
Mai Khao is a unique, interesting holiday destination. You can see the most wondrous natural formations, enjoy the island’s biggest waterpark, relax on a secluded beach, and dine in incredible restaurants. This small town is big on luxury, tranquillity and relaxation – though there are plenty of action-packed attractions if you fancy something more exciting!
