For the love of shopping
Throughout the town of Mojacar you’ll find little walkways and plazas lined with shops. Here you’ll discover touristy souvenirs, rugs, ceramics, iron works and leather all made by the local boutiques. If you want to spend some time exploring the city while you shop, you can visit one of the markets taking place in town. There is a weekly Wednesday market that provides locally grown produce and a Sunday morning market called the Rastro, which features a mix of all kinds of products from local merchants.
Dining out
You’ll find plenty of diverse dishes here in Mojacar. The plazas are lined with hidden restaurants and cafes offering up Italian, French, British, Argentinian and Spanish food at good prices. If you are new to Mojacar, you should venture into the town and try some of the tapas bars, which serve fresh and locally sourced dishes that are sure to satisfy your appetite.
Tourists welcome
Mojacar has built up a large tourist population thanks to its natural beauty and stunning beaches. Just a 30-minute stroll downhill, or a five-minute bus ride from the village, is the Mojacar Plaza. Here you’ll find a great range of beaches, golf resorts, cafes and nightclubs.
If you have children, they’ll love the resort promenade which has play parks and ice-cream parlours dotted along the street. There are 11 beaches in Mojacar, made up of both golden and white sand. There are also plenty of watersports available for adrenaline junkies including canoeing, sailing and banana boat rides.
Mojacar’s waters are full of aquatic life and a great way to explore them is by scuba diving. This area has a top-class diving school where expert instructors will guide you underwater in a safe and fun environment. The dives here are known as some of the most beautiful in Spain, and you’ll be able to see numerous species of underwater wildlife and even the wreckage of a World War 2 plane.
Fiesta time in the city
There are several festivals held throughout the year in Mojacar. Time your holiday right and you’ll have the chance to take in some of the rich history and culture of this part of Spain. The period leading up to Easter is an especially important time, when the residents here celebrate Holy Week. This includes lively festivities and a Good Friday procession which starts from the church and leads down to the beaches and promenade. The parade follows a statue of Jesus baring his cross, which symbolises the sacrifices he made.
Another popular festivity is the Moors and Christians Fiesta, happening early to mid-June and lasting for three days. This festival is known for its re-enactments of a heroic legend from the 15th century. Locals dress up as Arab residents or Catholic invaders and play out scenes from the legend in the town square. A big part of the celebration is the medieval market, with stalls offering traditional trinkets and cuisine custom to the time period.
Golf and recreation
If you’re big on golfing you won’t need to leave the passion behind on this holiday. Mojacar has two 18-hole golf courses set between the hills and Mediterranean Sea, so you can play your round while surrounded by the spectacular untouched beauty of Mojacar’s hills and cliffs.
If you’re itching to get active, Mojacar has plenty of recreational activities to enjoy, including horseback riding, cycling, hiking and even camel rides. A great way to explore Mojacar’s scenery is to go on one of the various walking tours. Tours head along the coastal cliffs and through areas that were once used by miners and shippers during the 19th century iron ore mining industry.
