History and festivities
Rich with history, one of the most awe-inspiring of Nea Moudania’s monuments is the 2,000 year old amphitheatre which has views over the Aegean Sea. This outdoor theatre comes alive in the second week of July when 2,000 people take their seats for theatre and music performance as part of the Festival of the Sea. As an added bonus, there is a mini sardine festival on the last Sunday when delicious grilled sardines and retsina – Greek resinated white wine – are offered out liberally.
Other buildings of note are the huge hilltop basilica at the highest point of the town with amazing views of the bay, and the Zografou Tower – a 14th century Byzantine tower with the later addition of a church.
An unusual addition to the town is the Museum of Fishing Vessels and Equipment, which is a private collection of Greek sea treasures. Exhibits include ancient anchors, compasses, lamps and interesting seashells.
A 15-minute drive away are the ruins of the 7th century city of Olynthos where you can see the layout of the city and ancient floor mosaics, all explained at the museum.
Exploring Kassandra
At the top of the Kassandra peninsula, the large city of Thessaloniki is a 35-minute drive away. Here you can admire the UNESCO World Heritage churches and monuments, and look around the shops. Between Nea Moudania and Thessaloniki, the Petralona Caves is a good stop for families. For under ¬5 entry you can ride on a small train down to the cave and see impressive rock formations.
There are also regular buses leading south into the finger-shaped headland of Kassandra and its beautiful beach resorts. You don’t have to go too far to uncover amazing beaches, as Nea Potidea beach and Nea Fokea beach are within half an hour for swimming in the calm, clear waters of the eastern bay. Even closer is the two-mile stretch of Agios Mamas beach, with restaurants and watersports on hand – just 10-minutes east by car.
