An inspirational town
Perama is a resort on the east coast of Corfu which boasts one of the most peaceful environments on the island. Less than 10 minutes from the cosmopolitan capital of Corfu Town, Perama is little more than a small strip of golden sand and a handful of bars and restaurants, specialising in Corfiot food and drink.
Perama has a rich literary history too, as a place featured in Gerald Durrell’s much-loved book ‘My Family and Other Animals’. It was in Perama that Durrell first discovered the local marine life and it became one of his favourite places to come and learn about the creatures of the deep.
Sunrises on the beach
Perama’s location on the east coast makes it perfect for watching the sun emerge from the horizon early in the morning, so if you’re looking for spectacular views on a cheap holiday to Corfu, this is a great place to head. The beautiful strip of sand is split in two by a tiny jetty which you can walk along and hire boats and snorkel equipment from. With your goggles and breathing apparatus you’ll be able to follow in Gerald Durrell’s footsteps and explore the briny deep for interesting and undiscovered sea life.
If kicking back with a book is more your style then Perama has you covered. The main strip of sand is largely populated by luxurious loungers and parasols. Day trips to the capital
Perama is just a 10-minute drive from Corfu Town, the historic and action-packed capital of the island. Buses run regularly and efficiently from Perama, arriving in the central square of the city, which has easy access to all the sights. First thing’s first, head down to the commercial district for a coffee and a browse of the boutique fashion shops and jewellers.
If you’re up for trying your hand at a bit of haggling, the Old Town is full of market stalls with locals trading in olive wood homeware, Corfiot produce and clothing. After which you could choose to dine in one of the authentic Greek establishments.
Above the Old Town is the towering Venetian Fortress which stands as a testament to the island’s rich and exciting history. This structure has withstood three Ottoman Empire sieges, and protected the city again and again from battle. Today, the fort is open for the public to walk around. Local tour-guides offer an immersive experience for a small price from just outside the entrance.
By night the capital city becomes a vibrant hub of eating, drinking and dancing. The restaurants cater for all cultures, offering international delicacies alongside local specialities. The pubs, bars and clubs provide everything from live jazz to club bangers, so whatever your taste, you’ll find a night to suit you. Plus, the establishments rarely close before the last customer calls it a night.
The best sunset on the island
A short trip across the width of island will find you in Pelekas, a charming and authentic Corfiot village on the west coast. You can get here either by jumping in a coach, taxi or car, or alternatively by joining the Corfu Trail – a network of paths that spans the entire island.
Pelekas is built on the side of a mountain, the top of which is known as Kaiser’s Throne. This lookout is heralded as the best point on the island for watching the famous Corfu sunset.
