Star Beach
Piskopiano is technically an inland town, but is close enough to the beach to make trips to the Aegean Sea extremely doable. At Star Beach, a 20-minute walk away, you’ll find watersporting activities like windsurfing, jet skis, banana boats, snorkelling and scuba diving. There are also a number of beachside cafes and the Star Beach Waterpark. It’s a modest waterfront playground, with slides, a lazy river and the splash park offers a family-friendly alternative to bobbing in the sea waves.
Also nearby is the Anissaras Beach, a 10-minute drive from Piskopiano and is a quieter stretch of sand with sunloungers and umbrellas. And because Piskopiano is so close to many other resorts, you’ll have access to those beaches as well, reachable via car hire or bus.
Lazy days
Piskopiano keeps things on the quiet side, so the number one activity here is wandering through the town’s narrow lanes and taking in the whitewashed houses and terracotta roofs.
You can catch a glimpse of Greek village life at the Piskopiano Museum of Rural Life or see the real thing while sipping a glass of wine on a local taverna’s outdoor terrace. And for more upbeat activities within reach, the museums, theme parks and guided tours at Hersonissos are down towards the coast.

The dining selection in town is supremely Greek, with a handful of family-run restaurants dishing up local favourites. In Piskopiano, good food comes with good settings, as you can dine on sun-drenched terraces, in homey dining rooms or in the shadow of a 16th-century church.
Here, you can expect everything from mezze platters to prime cuts of lamb, grilled prawns to moussaka, and more often than not, a complimentary dessert and shot of raki to add a little splendour to those cheap Greece holidays.

When staying in Piskopiano, you’re never far from an even wider array of resorts. Crete‘s busy capital Heraklion is only a 25-minute drive away, where you’ll find a 13th-century fortress on the waterfront. There are also a number of museums illuminating the town’s long and vibrant history as a port that’s switched ruling hands many times over the years.
The historic towns of Malia and Stalis lie east, in the opposite direction to Heraklion. Stalis is home to two beaches backed by a rocky cove as well as beach bars and tavernas. Malia is a vibrant spot with two faces – on one hand, it’s incredible for history buffs, as it is home to a Bronze Age palace and ancient Minoan town, and on the other, it’s one of Crete’s clubbing hotspots. So while you’re here, you can come for the history-filled days, and stay for the ouzo-filled nights.
