Have a day in Alicante

While the peace and quiet of Playa De San Juan holidays is certainly enticing, Alicante offers a glimpse of the more lively side of life here. It’s only a 15-minute drive away, so it’s easy to go there for some great food and evening entertainment.

If possible, try to work a full day of sightseeing into your itinerary. Santa Barbara Castle is a fascinating old fortress that overlooks the city and the surrounding bay. It’s a highlight for any visitor, as are the views of the area from there.

Likewise, put the old town of Barrio de Santa Cruz on your list. It’s a magical place made up of narrow streets, old houses and brightly-coloured plants. Some of Alicante’s best bars and restaurants are hidden away down its ancient alleyways.

Soak up San Juan’s sunny beaches

There’s no denying that holidays in Playa De San Juan can be spent just idling on the beach. From couples to families, everyone loves the beautiful sands and calm waters. And because there are sun-loungers, hammocks and umbrellas to hire, you can exactly where you are all day long.

Snacks are plentiful around the beach. Whether you fancy fresh Spanish coffee in the morning or delectable tapas in the evening. And there are lots of different activities available too, especially when it comes to watersports.

If you fancy a change of scenery, head to Alicante’s main beach, Playa del Postiguet. It sits at the foot of Santa Barbara Castle and is almost one kilometre long. There are great facilities on the beach, and it’s popular with families thanks to its safe waters.

Fancy some chocolate-tasting?

Holidays to Playa De San Juan can be as varied as you want – you’ve got a whole host of activities to choose from, all within a 30-minute drive from the town.

In Villajoyosa there’s the famous Valour Chocolate Factory, which is open for tours (and chocolate tasting!). Nearby is the Maigomó Mountain. Experienced hikers can head up to the top, while there are easy routes around the base for beginners. The views from here are incredible, especially those over the sea.

The neighbouring town of El Campello is a favourite with visitors, thanks to its big, sandy beach and buzzing town. In El Campello, hop on the train and it’ll take you all the way along the Costa Blanca. The Caves of Canalobre are a fascinating visit too. They’ve been used for everything, from war shelters to concert venues.

Take a boat to a pirate island

Opposite Alicante is Tabarca, the largest of all Valencia’s islands. Set just over 20km from the coast, it’s a protected marine reserve with an ancient history. It’s the only one of the islands that’s inhabited, and has been since the Greek times!

Tabarca has a fearsome history, including when the island was overrun by pirates. In the 1400s, they used it as a base for attacking the coastline between Valencia and Alicante.

Tourism is relatively new here, so you’ll have lots of room to explore. Tours tend to last a day and start from Alicante, taking around an hour to get to the island. You’ll visit both Playa de Tabarca and Playa de Puerto Viejo, and have the opportunity for swimming and diving off the coast.

Playa De San Juan is the ideal Costa Blanca holiday. You can combine beautiful beaches with delicious Spanish cuisine, rich cultural trips and welcoming hospitality. Spend as much or as little time on the long, rolling beach before heading off to hike up mountains, disappear into caves or enjoy the lively nightlife Alicante is famous for. You’re close to many of the region’s most popular attractions, but have the privilege of staying in a more peaceful town, away from the hustle and bustle of city streets.
