Wondrous water

You’ll be swimming in some of the best-kept beaches in the Med on your holiday to Cyprus. More than 60 of the beaches on the island have Blue Flag status, including both Polis Chrysochous Municipal Beach and Polis Chrysochous Camping Site.

About an hour from Polis is Kouklia, where you can get swept up in the romance of Aphrodite’s birthplace. Petra tou Romiou is an impressive rock formation found on pebble-strewn Aphrodite’s Beach.

If you’re looking for something with more action on your Polis holidays, head to nearby Latchi and unleash your inner adventurer at the water sports centre. Go scuba-diving, hire a boat or try your hand at windsurfing – the choice is yours.

Climb every mountain

Your Polis holiday wouldn’t be complete without a trip to the imposing Troodos Mountains, which dominate the Polis skyline. Carpeted in rich forest, the mountains are home to quiet villages, peaceful monasteries and stunning medieval churches.

While strolling along the paths, you’ll find wild sheep, and you may hear the swish of eagle wings overhead. Visit Troodos Village, located on the highest mountain, Mount Olympus. Here, you can hike or cycle to your heart’s content, or ski down the slopes if you’re there during snowy winter months. Pack a picnic and eat in the spectacular scenery that surrounds you, or head for the vineyards on the south-facing foothills to indulge in some of the region’s fine wines.

Greet the neighbours

Holidays in Polis can be sociable and you’re likely to meet friendly locals in the nearby villages. Latchi was originally a fishing village and fish is still on the menu in the restaurants along the picture-perfect marina. Sunbathe on the quiet beach in Latchi then take a scenic walk back to Polis, just 3km away.

Another rural hideaway, Argaka is a small village with a hint of citrus in the air. It boasts a tranquil beach, a myriad of walking trails and a smattering of shops, tavernas and cafés.

The tiny village of Miliou lies 10km away. Here, you’ll find almond and olive trees, vineyards and fruit orchards. The village attracts tourists who want to relax at the Ayii Anargyri Natural Healing Spa Resort. The spa uses natural spring water from the Ayia Anastasia Spring, which is believed to have powerful healing properties.

Explore the Peninsula

Forest meets mountains in the westernmost point of Cyprus, the Akamas Peninsula. This area of 230 square kilometres is home to a turtle hatchery at Lara Beach, where you can see turtles laying eggs between May and August. The Baths of Aphrodite offer great views over the Bay of Polis, so remember your camera. Avakas Gorge is a hiker’s paradise, with a 2.5km trail to squeeze along as you take in the remarkable sights.

You can also hire a 4×4 and explore the rocky shores and hills of the park, safari-style. You may catch a glimpse of indigenous snakes and lizards, or a monk seal if you’re near the sea caves on the coast.

The great outdoors

Feeling the need to get active without getting wet or taming mountains? Polis holidays offer a host of alternative activities for you to enjoy, including hiring four-legged transportation by taking a ride on a horse or donkey. Several stables offer treks in the Polis area. Follow a dusty track to a gorge, duck under branches as you climb a mountain or trot along cliff tops taking in panoramic views.

If you’re into golf, grab your seven iron, swing by one of the area’s picturesque golf courses and play 18 holes in an idyllic setting. Or how about going freshwater fishing for trout, carp or roach? You can do so in Evretou Dam, a reservoir 10 minutes away from Polis.

If you’re not sure where to go on holiday, Polis is a fantastic choice. After a refreshing break on the coast, you’ll leave feeling invigorated by the sea and mountain air. Your mind will be clear of the usual swirling thoughts that stop you living in the moment, and your body will be in tip-top condition for its re-entry into everyday life. It’s a holiday you’ll be telling your friends about for years to come.
