City vs beach life

The city offers fantastic shopping and entertainment, while at the beach you will find the black volcanic sands that have become a signature of holidays to Tenerife. Spend a few days unwinding on the popular Playa De Jardin – those seeking a tan can enjoy some downtime on their sun-loungers, while thrill-seekers can experience water sports both on and under the waves.

Playa de Jardin’s tropical surroundings are something special – here is where you’ll find palm trees and waterfalls lining the promenade. If you’re searching for a quieter beach, head to Playa Martianez where you’ll also find the water-park Lago Martianez. It houses a salt-water lake and several swimming pools, framed by sub-tropical gardens, so there’s lots to explore.

If you’re not the lounging type, or you simply need a change of scenery, then you are ideally placed for day trips. Families can enjoy the popular attraction of Lorque Park, which is based in Puerto de la Cruz. Watch the parrot shows, visit the white tiger enclosure and sit back and enjoy the dolphin, sea-lion and orca performance.

Gone fishing

In July, fiesta season takes hold! The embarcación de la Virgen del Carmen, (in honour of the patron saint, La Virgen del Carmen) is a very fun, and very wet, event. Thousands of people descend on the city to take part in this buzzing procession.

The event is traditionally for local people to wish good fortune and good weather to the fishing industry – which lies at the heart of Puerto de la Cruz. The celebrations involve a lot of water – as it’s symbolic of the sea – and runs to the local harbour, where a statue of the Virgen del Carmen is placed aboard a boat and taken on a trip around the bay.

Keen history enthusiasts will be pleased to hear that there are a variety of statues and monuments all over the city too. Take a selfie with ‘The Fishwife’, sculpted by Julio Nieto, which is a homage to the fishermen’s wives of Puerto de la Cruz.

After sunset

By night, Puerto de la Cruz really comes to life. Our tip? Watch a Canarian Wrestling show – it’s a good talking point and an authentic Tenerife experience. If you’re feeling thirsty afterwards, why not drink in the atmosphere of a classic Canary Islands bar?

Places stay open until the early hours and there’s a huge range of drinking holes and eateries on offer where you can grab a fruity cocktail, or an ice cold beer. If you’re still not tired, you could always head to the Casino Taora and try your luck. But be warned, if you win big, the drinks will be on you for the rest of the trip.

Eat fresh

Whether you’re partial to Spanish paella, or you’re missing the flavours of home, restaurants in Puerto de la Cruz cater for all tastes. Tapas bars, Chinese restaurants, steak houses and English pubs abound.
