Samos Town is the capital of Samos and is one of the island’s three ports. The town is also known as Kato Vathy as it’s situated immediately below the town of Vathy. The winding hilly streets that dominate the town are perfect for exploring and contain many fascinating antique and other shops. With its wonderful mix of neo-classical architecture and vibrant bars and shops, Samos Town caters for all visitors’ tastes.

You can either stay in one of Samos Town’s many hotels for your Samos holidays or rent an apartment – the town has plenty of options. From the very new to the more traditional type of accommodation, Samos Town is an ideal base for those who simply want to stay in this attractive port, or who wish to explore the whole island.

Keen sailors will love the facilities on offer from the Samos Nautical club and will be able to experience the thrill of sailing in the beautiful water of the Aegean Sea. If you love hiking, spend some time exploring the beautiful hills and countryside that surround Samos Town.

    The island of Samos is famous for its wine, and you can find the Samos Wine Museum in Samos Town. Situated close to the harbour you can learn all about wine making for only €2 and then add to your knowledge with a free wine-tasting after your tour.

    People-watching is always good fun, and spending some time in a harbourside cafe is the ideal way to do this. Just soak up the atmosphere, look at the expensive yachts in the port, take in the stunning view and daydream.

    If you like museums then head on down to the excellent Archaeological Museum, or drop in to the Byzantine Museum. The Archaeological Museum has a fantastic collection of sculptures and huge statues – its Kouros is an astonishing 5.5 metres tall. Next door to the cathedral is the Byzantine Museum, home to many stunning icons and manuscripts.

    Exploring around Samos Town

    With its steep hills, fantastic natural scenery and beautiful views, the area around Samos Town is stunning, and provides an excellent backdrop for you to explore – dotted with local tavernas to quench your thirst. Visit the historical Ano Vathy – immediately above Samos Town – and admire the murals in its old churches, or simply enjoy the peace and beauty of this village. This journey is best done on foot, as the streets are too narrow for cars. Cheap holidays to Samos are easy to create, with such an abundance of natural beauty available free of charge.

    Samos Town doesn’t have a beach, but the town is within easy reach of many areas where you can swim, sunbathe or windsurf. Gagou beach is only 800 metres from the town and there are plenty of other inlets and beaches right along this stretch of the coast. You can try out Kokkari beach if you’re after a good windsurfing spot close close to Samos Town, and Kedro beach is also within easy travelling distance.

    Shopping in Samos Town

    Designer labels and upscale luxury items – as well as fascinating antique shops – are situated close to the town’s famous lion statues near the harbour promenade. Look out for jewellery shops and snatch a bargain. Shoe-lovers will also have a field day here. Look out for the shops’ opening hours, as many close in the middle of the day, but then stay open well into the night.

    There are also some great cosy tavernas as well as fantastic restaurants in this part of town. Since you’re staying in a port that’s lined with local fishing boats, try and make fresh fish and seafood part of your diet. Or if you’re feeling adventurous, just walk into one of Samos Town’s many restaurants and experiment.
