Soma Bay's a beach life
Just 20 minutes’ from Hurghada Airport lies Soma Bay, with a stunning desert backdrop and a house reef popular with divers of all levels. Not to mention it’s also home to the largest kitesurfing school in Egypt. And for everything else, there are luxury beachside hotels catering to all your food and entertainment needs.
Top diving and snorkelling destination
If you’re keen to enjoy a spot of diving and snorkelling on your Egypt holidays, you won’t find a better location. Soma Bay boasts its own house reef, which is the area just before the seabed’s vertical drop, full of coral gardens and marine life. The reef, which is good for beginners and more experienced divers, starts at Shaab Saiman, the north headland, and reaches the southern part of Ras Abou Soma.
Just a short boat ride away from the tip of Soma Bay towards Safaga, is Tobia Arbaa. It’s a famous spot where seven remarkable pillars of coral reef rise from the sandy bottom. Expect to see pufferfish, lion fish and many shoals of colourful sea life, at a relatively shallow 20 metres.
Most of Soma Bay’s snorkelling sites are easily accessed from the shore. Like the area between Robinson Club’s beach and Bay Point where you can see coral clusters shaped like the crescent of the moon. Boats also leave for diving and snorkelling expeditions from the purpose-built marina and jetty at Abu Soma, and there are many diving schools to help you get started.
Let’s go fly a kite
You’ll find some of the best windsurfing and kitesurfing spots in Egypt around Soma Bay and south in Abu Soma. Both locations offer wide, shallow water in tidal lagoons with sand banks offering protection. Conveniently, the summer period from May to October provides the best wind conditions, though it’s possible to windsurf and kitesurf all year round.
Unsurprisingly the largest kite-training school in the whole of Egypt – 7BFT – is in Soma Bay, with teachers using state-of-the-art technology. After a day of fun, you can enjoy a chilled beer or cocktail in the Sky Bar of this authentic wooden building that overlooks the bay.
Life outside of the luxury hotels
The few luxury hotels in this community include the Moorish-style Robinson Club which features a spa and wellness centre, not to mention a nightclub. Then there’s the contemporary Palm de Soma boasts fantastic amenities for package holidays to Egypt, including an aqua park which is great for the kids. All the hotels offer private beaches, making use of the abundance of space on this remarkably wide sandy bay.
Entertainment in Soma is confined to the hotels, with a variety of bars and restaurants offering diverse and highly-praised cuisine options. Keeping everything contained in the hotels gives this area an additional air of tranquility. If you’re looking for some nightlife, the best place to head is Hurghada, with its great bars and clubs.
Exciting trips
Egypt is one of the most ancient civilisations on earth, which means you’ll never be short of places to visit from Soma Bay. You can find out about desert life with a jeep safari to a traditional Bedouin camp or head two hours away to the Emerald Mines at Marsa Alam.
Then you can always spend a day visiting one of the most important locations in Egypt, Luxor. A city built on the site of ancient Thebes over 4,000 years ago, it’s where you can see thousands of years worth of development.
If a game of golf is more your cup of tea, you don’t have to go far. The Cascades Golf and Country Club championship 18-hole par 72 course is beautifully placed in the desert landscape of Soma Bay, offering stunning views of the sea and surrounding mountains.
