Sorrento, a magical town
Situated in the Bay of Naples and overlooking the sea, Sorrento is the kind of town that casts its spell over visitors. The climate is fantastic, with visitors flocking to this idyll from the months of May to October, though even in winter temperatures remain pleasant at around 13°C meaning cheap holidays to Sorrento won’t leave you out in the cold.
With views stretching out across the bay to Naples and Mount Vesuvius, the town’s location is stunning. Sorrento has so much to offer for families as well as adults, with picturesque beaches and marinas. A walk among the lemon groves will refresh your spirits, after all, this is where the famous limoncello drink originated.
Making the most of the sea
This is an area that abounds in secret coves. Sorrento’s town beaches, Marina Grande and Marina Piccolo, are accessible from the centre of town but all along this coastline are pocket handkerchief size inlets where you can stretch out and catch some rays.
You can walk, or hire a scooter or car to explore this region. Bagni Regina Giovanna is a rocky inlet with ultra clear water, a six-minute drive along the coast and accessed through the ruins of a Roman villa. Further along the coast, about a 10-minute drive away, lies the resort of Puolo with its restaurants, long sandy beach and shallow water.
Exploring Sorrento
Expect to build up some impressive leg muscles when walking around Sorrento – this town is hilly, but there are plenty of buses if you feel like taking life at a more leisurely pace. If you want to cool off in a museum or art gallery, then Via Pieta, close to Piazzo Tasso, is an excellent choice. The town’s cathedral is extraordinarily beautiful with its frescos and stunning architecture dating back to the 15th century.
If your tastes run to something a tad more contemporary then the Wonderwall art gallery on Corso Italia is the place to see some of the best modern art around. Or you can always drop in on the Museo Correale di Terranova to see some astonishing furniture and paintings plus more traditional works of art.
Shopper's delights
Wander around Sorrento’s ‘Centro Storico’, and you’ll soon find a reason to open your wallet. Beautiful ceramics decorated in vibrant colours are plentiful, often bearing a lemon motif, so you’ll remember your time here when you use these plates back home.
La Rapida on Via Fuore is the place to go to invest in some stunning handmade leather sandals. Whereas Gargiulo & Jannuzzi is where you’ll find local ceramics, lacework, inlaid wood and all types of other treasures you never realised you wanted. Viale Enrico Carusa is the destination for this treasure house.
Day trips are easy from Sorrento
One of the reasons why Sorrento is so popular is because of its beauty and proximity to so many other attractive areas. Whether you want to explore the Neapolitan Riviera or hop on a boat and head out to the magical island of Capri, Sorrento is an excellent base for this part of Italy.
Capri has been the ‘go to’ place for international celebs for decades and you’ll soon see why. With its upscale restaurants and fantastic views, this destination is any holidaymaker’s dream. Pompeii is only a 45-minute drive away, which has extraordinary preserved ruins so it’s easy to catch a snapshot of what life was like in 70 AD.
