Stretch out on the sand

The town has a lengthy Blue Flag beach, so holidays to Tirrenia always include at least a couple of lazy days to soak up the sun. Having been cut off from the main road by a dense pine forest, the beach is wonderfully secluded, making it ideal for families. With a slow, shallow waterline, swimming is safe and fun, and there are plenty of amenities in the form of lidos with chairs for hire. This pretty beach is one of the main attractions of the region and a reason why so many Italians choose to holiday here.

Family fun

Adding a little excitement to Tirrenia holidays is as simple as visiting one of the fantastic, family-friendly theme parks for a day (the best of which is Sunlight Park, a modern water park just off the beach). With slides, rides and attractions for people of all ages, little ones to teenagers will love the chance to splash about, while parents can be sure they are safe. However, if you’re not a fan of water, Luna Park is a good option, with fairground rides, arcade games and live performances available daily. It’s all the fun of the fair, with great weather to boot.

Stay active

It may not be a large town, but Tirrenia is impressively equipped with a range of sporting facilities, with golf and water sports fans being particularly well catered for. Offering nine-hole and 18-hole courses, the town welcomes golfers of all abilities to embrace their competitive side and play a round or two. If you’re a water sports fan, the sea beckons novice windsurfers and experts alike. Jet skiing, windsurfing, paddleboarding and kitesurfing can all be enjoyed as well, so it depends how active you want your holiday to be.

Meet the locals

Animal fans will jump at the chance to combine their Tirrenia holidays with a little up close and personal interaction with some of the native species that run wild in the San Rossore Natural Park. There are many ways to explore this large nature reserve, from walking and driving to horseback. Taking you through a variety of habitats, tours will let you meet a host of animals, including wild pigs, so have your cameras at the ready. You’ll want to take your own food and drinks, however, as there are few amenities within the park.

Sample the seafood

Being a seaside town in Italy, you just know that the fresh seafood dishes, prepared while you watch, are a must-try delicacy. Proud to serve a huge variety of seafood straight from the boat, the restaurants on Viale del Tirreno, a promenade of sorts running parallel to the beach, will prepare your meal especially for you, with many choosing to use the traditional open-air barbecuing method. Anyone old enough to enjoy a tipple will enjoy washing down the fresh food with a glass of Bianco Pigato, a locally-produced white wine with a crisp finish.

Enjoy a day trip

Holidays to Tirrenia are packed full with things to see and do but, given that Pisa is just a few minutes away, you’d be missing out if you didn’t head out for at least one day. Of course, there’s the Leaning Tower of Pisa to see, but there’s so much more than that: a daily food market, designer shops and a host of incredible trattorias and cafés. Said to be one of the most beautiful, cultural parts of Tuscany, Pisa gives you a look at the ‘real Italy’ and, after a day of sightseeing, Tirrenia will be waiting for you again.

Renowned for having a large yet secluded beach that welcomes water sports fans and families alike, Tirrenia is a seaside town with a difference. Favoured by Italian holidaymakers who wish to get away from it all, but without travelling too far, this beautiful, Art Deco haven will offer you the perfect mix of a sleepy beach town and a fun-seeker’s paradise. It’s a real jewel in the Tuscan crown.
