The Canary Islands have a mixture of black volcanic sand beaches, vast strips of golden sand, city beaches and rolling sand dunes. Tenerife’s Playa de la Arena consistently gains the Blue Flag for its quality black sands and facilities along the promenade, including restaurants and laid-back bars.

Over in Fuerteventura, there’s an entirely different vibe at Corralejo, where Blue Flag Grandes Playas stretches for 10 kilometres along the coast, and is wide enough for much of it to feel deserted. In Fuerteventura, stay at a resort in either the north or south of the island close to one of its natural parks, which encompass miles of sand dunes and some of the island’s best beaches. Or the purpose-built resort of Costa Caleta is in the centre of the island with a short airport transfer and proximity to the capital.

Costa Caleta Hotel

The highlight of this All Inclusive hotel is the rooftop bar, with two small pools, two whirlpools and a mini-golf course up there too. There’s another pool down on the ground and a cocktail bar for the evenings after your buffet meals. Activities include playing football or basketball and going to the gym, plus enjoying flamenco nights and professional shows in the evenings. Kids have their own club, pool and playground, and when you want to explore it’s only a 10-minute walk to the beach and Costa Caleta’s harbour.

Servatur Waikiki

Location is key at Servatur Waikiki, just a few minutes’ walk from the beach and Playa del Ingles’ centre, or hop on the free beach shuttle bus. Centred around a huge pool with snack bar, there’s also a kids’ pool and splash playground. Things to do while the kids are entertained at the clubs include a gym, fitness classes and games area, and playing volleyball, water polo or table tennis. Or take them to the Suneo Playhouse and adventure playground. Two buffet restaurants also have cooking stations, and after dinner there’s a mini disco followed by shows and live music.

La Palma and Teneguia Princess

This 4* clifftop hotel is surrounded by banana groves and has the Atlantic as its neighbour, meaning the 11 pools and three pool bars provide unbelievable sea views. Dine at the buffet restaurant or take late-breakfast at seaview La Choza. The list of inclusive activities covers pool games, archery, pistol and rifle shooting, beach volleyball, aerobics and gym sessions. Kids have a miniclub and mini disco, which is followed by live music, shows and discos. For an extra fee you can also use the spa with hydrotherapy and reflexology or play tennis and mini-golf.

Bluebay Lanzarote

A lagoon pool winds through the grounds of this low-rise, Spanish style hotel, with a snack bar on hand. Main meals are served at the buffet restaurant, which hosts entertainment after dinner, or you can relax in the lobby bar. There’s also a kids’ pool and club, and you can all play table tennis or football together, with activities like the gym reserved for adults. For an additional fee, head to the spa for a massage or play billiards. Bluebay Lanzarote is a 20-minute walk to the town centre or Aquapark Costa Teguise and a five-minute drive to Costa Teguise beach with watersports.

With loads going on for all members of your group, the fantastic Landmar Costa Los Gigantes has a whopping 3 pools, including a kids’ pool and two splash pools with slides. Also for families are kids’ clubs for newborns to teens, a playground and gladiator challenge days, plus kids go free to nearly Loro Parque. There’s fun for everyone at the cinema, bowling alley, games arcade and sea-view aerial adventure course. The multiple restaurants provide buffets with kids’ meals, themed a la carte dishes and barbecue food, and there’s the added benefit of ice cream during the day and an in-room minibar. Nights are also busy, with mini discos, pop shows and bingo on an al fresco stage.
