The best time of year to book your last minute holiday

August is the best time to visit Kos for the most sunshine, the highest temperatures and the warmest seas – both averaging 26°C. But even if you’re travelling in the shoulder months of May or October the temperature only drops a little to around 20°C, which may be preferable if you want to do lots of walking and sightseeing.

Whenever you decide to visit, the best last minute deals are available no earlier than eight weeks in advance. After that, keep checking back until you find a deal that catches your eye as we update our offers all the time.

Stay in the island's capital for the best access

In just over four hours you’ll land at Kos International Airport and can then be whisked to even the furthest points on the island within an hour.

With its busy nightlife, over 150 restaurants and both ancient and modern attractions to explore, taking a last minute holiday in Kos Town is a cinch – and it’s only 45 minutes from the airport. You can look around the waterfront castle and Roman villa, go shopping or hop on a boat from the marina. Then come back and decide what to eat from the worldly offerings, and party on Nafklirou and Diakon streets.

But you don’t have to go far to find a more laid-back place to book last minute. Just south of Kos Town is Psalidi and north is Lambi, both of which provide calmer bases but with the capital in their sights. Lambi is a few minutes’ walk or cycle ride away along a flat path, and has a one-kilometre beach suitable for kids to play on or grown-ups to sip cocktails in the beach bars.

And Psalidi is only a little further – you can walk along the coast and be in Kos Town in 25 minutes, or stay put on the promenade with a smattering of shops, bars, restaurants and bakeries. A deep bay provides sheltered sunbathing, and top swimming and paddling conditions.

Smaragdi Hotel

Running with the classic Greek white and blue theme, this petite hotel has an intimate feel but the studios and two-bed apartments are pleasingly spacious. They each come with a balcony or terrace right by the pool and have a kitchenette so you can prepare some quick meals. The pool has a children’s area and bar at hand for drinks and light meals under shaded seating if you don’t fancy cooking, or head into Lambi for restaurant meals. It’s a 15-minute walk to the beach and only five minutes further to be in the midst of Kos Town.

Nirides Beach Hotel

Run by the friendly Stavros and Smaro, Nirides Beach Hotel is just moments from its namesake beach. In fact you can see the sea from the pool, sports courts and mini-golf, as well as many of the rooms. There are olive and fruit trees in the pretty gardens and a shaded area where kids can play on the bouncy castle and other equipment. All studios and one or two-bed apartments have kitchenettes but you might not bother cooking when you try the Greek food in the restaurant using produce from a local farm.
