Living the high life in Portugal
Portugal is a country where you can enjoy championship golf courses, incredible spas and Michelin-starred restaurants in a fabulous climate. The Algarve, named Europe’s Leading Beach Destination at the World Travel Awards in 2016, certainly packs a punch. Here you can visit historic towns, browse for traditional arts and crafts and enjoy a range of indulgent treatments in one of the many wellness centres. Go to see, and be seen at, the stylish Vilamoura marina complex for fine dining, great nightlife and a lively beach scene.
Madeira, is fast catching up with the Algarve as a spa destination and its capital, Funchal, has a deliciously cosmopolitan atmosphere with its chic boutiques, elegant seafood restaurants and art galleries. Explore the delightful 15th-century cathedral and sample the famous local dessert wine named after the island in one of the vibrant bars. Porto Santo too, a hidden gem in the Madeira archipelago, is becoming synonymous with luxury breaks with its uncrowded shores, Seve Ballesteros-designed golf course and selection of gourmet restaurants.
Jet off to Portugal and enjoy VIP treatment under the sun
With flights from the UK at just under three hours, and average July temperatures of around 25°C a luxury break to Portugal opens up a world of sunbathing, sightseeing and relaxation possibilities.
Portugal’s premier beach destination is of course the Algarve, with mile upon mile of coastline revealing everything from vast stretches of flaxen sands to intimate coves. Places to stay range from the city of Lagos with lux nightlife or horse-riding in the countryside and Tavira‘s unspoilt shores that feel like private beaches but have authentic restaurants and sleek bars close at hand.
Madeira is ideal for those who like a balance of beach life and sightseeing. The main attraction is its incredible landscape adorned with caves, waterfalls and an abundance of flora and fauna, and its historic capital has a pretty marina and seaside lidos. If it’s an escapist retreat you’re after, Porto Santo might appeal. This bijou island offers superb beaches, tranquil surroundings and a top-notch golf course.
