A guide to the best restaurants in Isla Canela
Since it’s smaller than other hotspots for holidays to Costa de la Luz, Isla Canela doesn’t boast the same range of food as a big city. However, it does offer a handful of excellent beachside restaurants and snack bars, most of which do simple, Spanish cuisine containing lots of fresh fish and seafood. There are international options too, including a mouth-watering Chinese restaurant and an ice cream parlour that scoops the finest flavours for miles around. And since almost all of the restaurants are located directly on the beach, you can make the transition from beach towel to bar stool effortlessly.
Traditional Spanish at La Rana
The owner of this charming little Spanish restaurant, Ana, has been working on her trade here for well over a decade. Ana has built up an impeccable reputation for great service and even better tasting cuisine. Welcoming guests into the restaurant as she would old friends into her home, Ana is quite happy to recommend the catch of the day, cook it to perfection and then debone it expertly in front of your eyes.
Lunch and cocktails at Chiringuitos los Pocos
Don’t be fooled by the slightly tired appearance of this beach bar from the outside – the interior is a culinary treasure trove. With menus in English and English-speaking waiters, it couldn’t be easier to order some authentic Spanish fare and give your taste buds a treat. Its proximity to the beach makes it a great place to enjoy a late lunch and perhaps a cocktail or two – don’t miss the Puerto de Indias pink strawberry gin from nearby Seville.
Tapas time at Cerveceria El Paraiso
Another beachside bar with English-speaking staff, Cerveceria El Paraiso specialises in tapas. The waiters pride themselves on attending to your every need and ensuring you thoroughly enjoy your meal. The prices are very reasonable for the size of the portions on offer. All of the tapas regulars are cooked to perfection, while more adventurous diners might like to push the boat out and try the pig’s cheek cooked in paprika. You won’t be disappointed.
Chinese fare at Palacio Dragon
If all that Spanish cuisine has got you hankering for something a little different, Palacio Dragon might be for you. The no-frills approach to the Chinese restaurant’s appearance is more than compensated for by the friendly welcome and delicious offerings inside. The portions are huge and the prices are affordable, plus there’s takeaway service. The aromatic duck is especially recommended.
Self-service at Los Barriles
Another lovely tapas bar just off the beach, Los Barriles has a self-service system that allows you to pile your plate with as much tasty food as your heart desires. Very friendly service compliments well-executed dishes and generous portions, along with reasonable prices. Los Barriles is always popular with the locals – a sure-fire sign that any restaurant is a winner. The multilingual menu comes in English, Spanish, French and German.
Pizza pizza at Heladeria y Pizzeria Remo
This charming Italian pizzeria and ice cream parlour is situated at the eastern end of Isla Canela beach and offers another culinary alternative to seafood and Spanish tapas. Although priced slightly higher than its competitors, the parlour boasts an impressive selection of quality ice creams that are handmade in the area and sure to delight anyone with a sweet tooth. A great place to step out of the sun and cool down with a gourmet cone.
