A guide to the best restaurants in Lixouri
As the second largest town in Kefalonia, you won’t be short of culinary choice in Lixouri. It has a wide range of restaurants, most of which offer traditional Greek cuisine but plenty focus on international dishes too, including the best battered fish and chips on the island. Located in the bay of Argostoli, Lixouri benefits from fresh seafood all year round. You shouldn’t depart from your Greek island holidays without tucking into a Kefalonia meat pie here, or veggie Gyros – pitta wrap – for the non-meat eaters.
Rustic charm at Ladokolla stin Plagia
This eatery is authentically Greek and feels more like dining in a local’s home than a restaurant. The hosts – two brothers – are extremely welcoming and speak passionately about their homemade dishes using locally-sourced ingredients. With a beautiful view to boot, this could be your go-to stop to get that meat pie.
Organic food and sea views at Captain Nicolas
This restaurant occupies an elevated position above the sea with stunning views across the bay. The unadulterated view is complemented by the organic, wholesome food on the menu. They get the basics spot on with home-grown organic tomatoes, fresh bread from the wood-fired oven and cheese made from the milk of their very own cow. You can even buy some homemade jam to take back.
Veggie options at Antonello's at Xi
Situated on the beach, Antonello’s at Xi is a good lunchtime spot owned by a British woman and her Greek husband. With a rustic outdoor seating area on the way to the beach, they have a good range of Greek dishes including vegetarian options that are not easy to find in Kefalonia.
Pizza fix at Bella Mangia
Greek pizza has a different sort of base to the Italian variety – baked in a pan rather than a pizza oven. You won’t care how it’s made when you get a taste of Bella Mangia though, you’ll just want to know when you can get more! Found on the seafront at the end of a line of restaurants, their huge pizzas and complimentary desserts will satisfy even the largest appetites.
Greek style silver service at Novita
Dining on holidays in Kefalonia is traditionally a relaxed affair, but Novita certainly has an extra touch of class about it, maybe it’s the white linen tablecloths. With a handy location on the main road overlooking the harbour, the restaurant looks impressive on the outside and has tables arranged over three floors. Their authentic Greek dishes like moussaka are the best.
Friendly ambience at Tsibibo
Surrounded by pomegranate trees decorated with pretty white lanterns, waiting staff welcome diners to Tsibobo with a big smile. Situated in town it’s a great stop for lunch or dinner, away from the busy harbour or main roads. Try the chilli-baked feta cheese followed by steak and chips.
Fresh fish at Oti Fame ki oti Pioume
This harbour-front restaurant has beautiful views of the bay and provides an attentive service. The menu is filled with simple but delicious seafood and fish dishes, as well as meat kebabs and mezze. Go for dinner or pop by for a relaxing drink of ouzo, tsipouro or local wine to enjoy the ambience.
Quirky setting at Spiaggia Taverna
Designed to look like a pirate ship, it’s no surprise the owner of this Vatsa Beach taverna is quite a character. Diners never fail to be impressed by this restaurant, which offers authentic Greek food washed down with wonderful house wine or freshly made lemonade. Come for lunch and you might just stay all afternoon.
Greek nights at Avli Mezedopolio
Greek is the order of the day – or night – at Avli Mezedopolio taverna, with a weekly ‘Greek night’ to really get diners in the mood. Currently running on Fridays, Greek night features traditional live music and entertainment without the smashing plates. You can get a good two course meal with wine for €30.
Sweet cravings satisfied at I Scream for Ice-Cream
This place receives rave reviews for it’s headliner ice-cream – the perfect antidote to a long, hot day. They have a huge range of fresh flavours, changing on a daily basis. Our favourites include coconut, peanut butter and berries and cream. Find it in the main square with plenty of outdoor seating and be prepared to get hooked.
