A guide to the best restaurants in Punta Umbria
Many of the Punta Umbria restaurants offer riverfront views across the Odiel to Huelva, or oceanfront vistas overlooking the deep blue sea. As with most towns you’ll come across on Costa de la Luz holidays, the menus take advantage of the abundant seafood available on their doorstep, with delicious platters and catches of the day being the norm. Although, it is possible to find Italian and fusion alternatives, as well as a delectable bakery in the area. Here is a selection of some of the culinary highlights of Punta Umbria that you can try out on your holidays to Costa de la Luz.
Seafood specialities at Meson Diego
This traditional seafood specialist is owned and run, as the name suggests, by a chap named Diego. With an extensive range of seafood options – all locally-sourced from Andalusia’s bountiful waters – Meson Diego offers exquisite dishes at affordable prices. Though the focus is on seafood, meat-lovers will be equally happy with the fare on offer and whatever you do, save some room for one of Diego’s homemade desserts.
Ocean views at Restaurante Miramar
Situated right on the beachfront, this restaurant affords lovely ocean views as you enjoy your meal. And enjoy it you certainly will – concentrating heavily on seafood platters and fresh fish, you won’t be disappointed with the quality of the food or the service you receive. The place itself is a sizeable building, capable of holding well over 100 people, so reservations shouldn’t be necessary on all but the busiest of occasions.
Mediterranean cuisine at El Galeon
This father-son establishment serves authentic Spanish and Mediterranean cuisine, with an understandably heavy accent on seafood. The arroz caldoso – a rich, aromatic fish soup with rice – comes especially recommended, as does the ham, clams and paella. In fact, pretty much everything on the menu is delicious. The prompt and friendly service, reasonable prices and generous portions will only improve your dining experience.
Lunches at Taberna El Peniscon
This restaurant doubles up as a bar in the evening, hotting up as the night wears on with music and conversation. However, it’s open for lunch from 11am to 5pm and reopens again at 7pm, allowing plenty of opportunities to sample its tasty menu. The outdoor terrace, situated in the centre of town, allows you to look over the hustle and bustle without actually being part of it. A wide variety of seafood, fish and meat dishes are on offer, all of which come at an excellent price.
Perfect pizzas at O Sol Mio
If all that Spanish cuisine gets a bit too much and you want to inject a little variety into your diet, this delicious pizzeria might just be the ticket. You’ll be hard pushed to find a bigger pizza at a cheaper price anywhere on the Andalusian coast. A single order will easily satisfy two ravenous diners, as the portions at O Sole Mio are massive. The thin bases are exquisite and all toppings fresh and succulent. The restaurant’s riverside location also makes it a great place to stop in and watch the sunset over neighbouring Huelva, so if you’re looking at late deals to Costa de la Luz make sure you leave time to plan a visit during your trip.
Afternoon tea at Cafeteria Nunez
This cosy little café is the perfect place to have breakfast or enjoy an afternoon tea or coffee. Located conveniently just off the river Odiel, it’s within easy walking distance of all of the major hotels and just one block from the waterfront. As well as offering a respectable breakfast menu, you can treat yourself to one or two tasty cakes and pastries from their mouth-watering selection.
