A guide to the best restaurants in Thassos Town
Holidays to Thassos are all about sitting back and enjoying the local cuisine, while Thassos Town is a fantastic spot with plenty of restaurants and tavernas to choose from. The Old Port area is the prettiest part of town and is where many of the eateries are located. Given its seaside location you’ll discover a wonderful supply and variety of fish such as octopus, red mullet, sea bream and calamari served in most of the restaurants, while lamb is another great choice for your main course. Most places are vegetarian friendly as much of the cuisine utilises the fresh Mediterranean vegetables, fruits and herbs grown all over the island.
Classic Greek by the port at Simi Restaurant
This restaurant might be a nod to Thassos’ sister island Simi, even though it’s a fair old distance between them. Set in a lovely location in the Old Port this taverna serves all the popular dishes – Greek salad, calamari, and keftedes meatballs. Located near the water’s edge it’s a great place to watch the world go by.
A double helping at The Twins Restaurant
Twins, Elias and Nikos, run this restaurant. They specialise in Greek cuisine serving dishes such as stifado – meat and potato stew – and kleftiko – slow cooked lamb wrapped in parchment paper. This small and cosy taverna is located centrally and also offers fish, and even pizza cooked by Nikos.
Excellent views inside and out at Mesogeios Restaurant
Open all year round, this restaurant is in the Old Port area overlooking the sea. They serve traditional Mediterranean cuisine such as fresh fish, salads, meat and vegetarian options and the attentive staff will help you choose a wine to suit your dish. This taverna has some quirky touches including a colourful mural and chandeliers.
Fish and dancing at Musses Fish Restaurant
This authentic venue is as popular with locals as it is with tourists, serving fish such as barbecued sea bream and grilled octopus, as well as meat dishes. There’s usually Greek music playing and the owner enjoys getting up for a dance. The tropical-style wooden decked area surrounded by grass has views out to sea.
A lively lookout over the bay at Papalimani Beach Bar and Restaurant
Considered one of the liveliest spots on the island, this bar and restaurant is in a lovely Thassian setting overlooking a sandy bay, with the sea shimmering in the background and surrounded by palm trees. Enjoy the Greek food, then get ready for some traditional Greek dancing.
British bacon and eggs at Spiros Cafe
Serving fantastic breakfasts, lunches and snacks catering to British tastes, you can’t go wrong with this relaxed venue. It’s particularly known for its gigantic English breakfasts with very generous servings of bacon. But you’ll still feel like you’re in a nice Greek venue – it’s small with plenty of greenery in the part-covered outdoor area.
All Greek at Mylos Taverna
This is the kind of place you’ll end up coming back to time and time again on Thassos holidays. This restaurant feels like the real Greek deal. It serves traditional Greek food like Greek salads and mezze, and fantastic fish such as seabass, red mullet and mixed seafood platters.
The heart of town at Tavernaki
This taverna is located in a lovely old stone building in a quaint street near the harbour, and you’ll feel like you’re in the heart of Greek life when you dine here. You can choose from an a la carte or set menu, with a variety of mezze, lamb, stuffed squid and other fish dishes.
Home-cooked leisurely meal at Masabuka
There’s a sign at this restaurant that says ‘Fast food, no, good food, yes!’ and that’s certainly the case. The Greek food is tasty and includes chicken souvlaki, pitta bread with tzatziki, homemade chips and more. It’s located in the Old Port area with plenty of shops nearby to browse, too.
Laid-back meals and top desserts at Namaste
Namaste is the Sanskrit word for a respectful greeting given to others. It’s a good name for this simple restaurant, set in a peaceful location overlooking the sea with very attentive staff. Fish, Greek salads, meatballs and some of the best sticky Greek desserts are on the menu.
