When to go

Hurghada is in a enviable position when it comes to its sub-tropical desert climate. That said, visitors here can expect mild to warm winters and hot to scorching summers. From June to September temperatures average in the mid 30s°C. This means it’s a great area to visit throughout the year, though be aware that depending on when you go, temperatures can cool in the evenings.

Health and safety

Hepatitis A is a recommended vaccination for all travellers to Egypt. Otherwise ensure that you get in touch with your GP eight weeks prior to travel to find out about any additional vaccinations you may need. As with any holiday, you should take out comprehensive travel and medical insurance to cover yourself and family on your trip.

Passports and Visas

British citizens will need a passport valid for at least six months from the day of travel. You will also need a visa to enter Hurghada in the Red Sea region. It’s £20 for a single adult visa, which can be obtained at the airport when you arrive.

Getting around

Flights land at Hurghada International Airport and most tour operators include transfers as part of a holiday package so getting to your resort is easy. Many of the region’s hotels are located along the resort strip to the south of Hurghada such as in Soma Bay and Sahl Hasheesh. For trips to Hurghada city during your stay, convenient microbuses run a regular service between the old town centre and back again.

If you’d like to head further afield, there are a few daily buses that will take you to destinations such as Cairo and Luxor. Hiring a car is also an option and you’ll find agencies near the airport and around Hurghada city centre. For peace of mind it might be wise to book a car in advance.

Advice for travellers with children

As the airport is only a 15-minute drive away from Hurghada’s centre and the coastal resort strip, this is a convenient place to take your children. The 35 kilometre stretch of sandy beach is also popular with families and is easily accessible from the hotels along the coast.
