A guide to things to do in Dalaman Region
With exquisite coastal areas, bustling markets and interesting historic ruins, there’s no end to the exciting things you can see while visiting the Dalaman region. For nature lovers there’s a never-ending amount of outdoor activities available including paragliding and hiking, as well as boat trips around the region. If you’re visiting the area for the first time and wondering where to go and what things to add to your list, here’s a sample of some of the best attractions on the peninsula.
The turquoise coast
It’s no wonder this region is nicknamed the Turquoise Coast – with bright cobalt water shimmering in the sunshine this is the ideal area for a spot of swimming. There are numerous beaches along the coastline of Dalaman, most with fantastic watersport facilities, restaurants and shops dotted around the sand. Sarigerme and Sarsala beach are two of the most idyllic spots to visit on your Dalaman holiday.
The most famous coast in this region is the Olu Deniz beach with its popular swimming spot, the blue lagoon. This lagoon is set in a nature reserve and has calm shallow water, almost like stepping into a pool or bathtub. There’s also a snack bar if you start to get peckish, and kayaks and pedalos are available to hire.
Local markets
If you’re looking for a place to pick up souvenirs and local goods head to the markets operating in the resort towns. Almost every resort has its own market and many are on different days of the week, meaning you’ll have plenty of opportunities to stock up on souvenirs on cheap holidays to the Dalaman region.
Marmaris bazaars are one of the most popular spots to browse. Among the stalls and cobbled streets you’ll be able to pick up some unique items such as traditional Turkish carpets, spices and hand-painted dishes. Marmaris also has a Leather Centre which sells a wide selection of leather goods including bags, belts, sandals and jackets. If you’re looking for some jewellery, Marmaris’ Gold Centre is the ideal place to find silver or gold pieces.
Sea turtles and loggerhead turtles
This area is known for its huge population of sea and loggerhead turtles. So much so that there’s even a loggerhead turtle festival on Iztuzu Beach every year. This festival is called Caretta Caretta in keeping with the scientific name for the animal, and comprises watersport competitions and firework displays.
For a more intimate viewing of these creatures you can visit the Iztuzu Beach rescue centre. Here professionals take care of injured hatchlings and help rehabilitate them so they can be re-released into the water.
Mud baths
A visit to the mud baths in Dalyan is a great way to cool off and sooth any sunburn. These sulphur-rich baths are thought to give relief to rheumatic ailments and even treat pesky skin conditions. The best way to benefit from these baths is to rub the mud over your body and face and let it dry until it feels like the coating is beginning to crack. Then, wash away the mud and take in the new revitalised you.
If you have any children they are also welcome to join in on the fun at the mud baths. They can splash around getting dirty while you enjoy a spa-like treatment.
