A guide to things to do in Samos
Samos is a perennially popular island with holidaymakers, and with beautiful beaches, ancient ruins and instagram-worthy scenery it comes as no surprise. Here’s some ideas of what to do and how to make the most of your holidays to Samos, just don’t forget your camera!
Wonderful beaches
Many of Samos’ beaches are only accessible by foot. Megalo Seitani in the north is one such beach – very isolated, and great for those who value privacy and exclusion. It’s also reachable by boat from Karlovassi, saving you a two-hour walk. Whichever beach you choose on your Samos holidays, you’ll find deliciously warm water and a shallow sea. Livadaki beach is also famous for the odd beach party or two.
But beaches aren’t simply for sunbathing. The holiday resort of Pythagorian lies on the on the southeast of Samos island. Come here if you want to enjoy relaxing with your children – the water is shallow and the beach itself is within easy reach of plenty of restaurants. Nearby Potakaki and Remataki beaches are popular with holidaymakers looking for watersports opportunities.
Wine lovers are welcome
The island of Samos has long been famous for its fantastic wines. There’s even a wine museum in Samos Town. The delicious sweet muscat grapes produce a wonderful dessert wine – but the local Samos wine co-operative has also produced some stunning dry whites in recent years. A visit to the wine museum is a real treat – you can escape the sun for a short while and you’ll be positively encouraged to taste wine during your tour.
Castles and ruins
Sometimes it’s a good idea to explore a bit more of a holiday destination than just its wonderful beaches. You’ll be spoilt for choice on holidays to Greece, particularly in Samos. There’s a castle in Pythagorion that dates back to 1821. Also close to Pythagorion are the fantastic remains of the Heraionan – an ancient temple to the goddess Hera – and the remnants of a 5th-century basilica.
Have fun, be merry
Samos is well known for its range of tavernas and restaurants and a highlight of many holidays is the chance to try out different restaurants. Whether you’re staying in Samos Town or venturing further afield, you won’t be far from a wonderful restaurant. Joe’s Pizza on Pappa Beach offers wonderful views, is right on the beach – and the food’s pretty good as well.
If you’re staying in or close to Pythagorion, then you’re in for a treat. Whether you love Greek food or simply want a burger and chips washed down with a refreshing beer, there are plenty of family-friendly restaurants to choose from in this wonderful destination. Many of the restaurants transform into brilliant nightclub venues once the sun has set.
Watersports are always fun
If your passion is jet-skiing or paragliding, Samos has an awesome array of watersports on offer. You can even rent a boat from some of the companies offering watersports services and spend a blissful time exploring Samos’ secret coves.
If you’re based in Pythagorion you’re within easy reach of some of the island’s most popular watersports facilities. Holidays are the perfect opportunity to try out a new sport and – with great wind-conditions, a wonderful climate and some expert tuition – you might just discover a new passion.
Awesome scenery
Check out the fantastic Potami waterfalls at Karlovasi. This isolated beauty-spot is simply stunning. There are cafes at the summit of the hill but be prepared for an energetic trek to get to the waterfall. Alternatively on the southwest of the island you can check out the cave of Pythagoras close to Mount Kerkis. This is said to be where one of the founders of mathematics held his classes thousands of years ago. Wherever you wander on Samos island you’ll find beautiful villages, fantastic restaurants and stunning countryside – all you have to do is enjoy them.
