Less well-known than the Costas, cheap holidays in Murcia offer all the sun and fun of more famous regions.
Given that cheap holidays in Spain continue to go from strength to strength despite the global economic downturn, it is unsurprising that the south-eastern Spanish province of Murcia is anxious to develop its own tourist sector.
Murcia is often overshadowed by more well-known tourist regions such as the Costa del Sol and Barcelona – and the nearby province of Alicante – but situated as it is in Andalucia it has just as much to offer as its neighbours, including excellent hot sunny weather for most of the year.
Since 2004 the Murcian government has expanded tourist services at its main airport, San Javier – currently offering routes to seven UK airports – but this is due to end next year when the new Regional Murcia International Airport opens and passenger operations at San Javier come to an end.
One of the UK carriers that offers cheap flights to Murcia is Jet2.com, and it recently said that the new airport will be more convenient for tourists, situated as it is just 19 kilometres from Murcia City and 28 kilometres from the Costa Calida coast. It will also have the very best in facilities designed to whisk passengers through the airport and into the sunshine, along with brand new car hire facilities and road links to the A30 motorway network, giving holidaymakers easy access to all the region’s major holiday resorts.
Self-catering villas are a popular choice among many Britons in Murcia. They can be found up in the Sierra Cabrera mountains with spectacular views, their own pools and excellent facilities, as well as being just a short drive from beach resorts and towns such as Cabrera, which offer a wide range of family activities such as children’s arts and crafts and horse riding.
