Grand discoveries
Brussels is a hub of amazing art and awe-inspiring architecture. Grand by name and grand by nature, from the moment you step foot in the Grand Place – the city’s most iconic square, you’ll be blown away by the sheer opulence of your surroundings.
From a simple market square in the 12th century, it’s now thought of by many as the most beautiful square in the world, brimming with activity. No matter what time of year you visit, you’ll discover exciting events and performances here all year round – from concerts and fairs to sound and light shows, there’s never a dull moment in this beating heart of the city.
From here you can dive right into the Brussels City Museum at the Maison du Roi, where you can learn about the city’s fascinating heritage all from within stunning neo-Gothic quarters. And just a stone’s throw away are the Royal Galleries, thought to be Europe’s first ever shopping arcade and the oldest gallery in Europe. Its elegant atmosphere will have you browsing local stores and restaurants whilst feeling like a king or queen.
For a more modern discovery, you simply can’t come to Brussels without seeing the emblematic Atomium. Now an iconic symbol of Brussels, this nine-sphered monument looks like something straight out of a sci-fi movie!
Designed for the Brussels’ World Fair in 1958, it represents an iron unit cell magnified 165 billion times (wowzers!). You’ll be left astounded as you make your way through its one-of-a-kind interior spaces, as well as revealing one of the most beautiful views of Brussels from within too. If you take a stroll by it on a night, you’ll certainly get a treat for the eyes – 2970 led bulbs lighting up the sky!
Foodie Heaven
Foodies will be in their element in this city! Belgium is known for two things when it comes to food and drink – chocolate and beer! And boy, oh boy, will you have fun finding your favourites.
Go chocolate shopping in the Royal Galleries – your taste buds will thank you as you tuck into authentic Belgian chocolates, carved into every shape and size imaginable! A gift box of your favourites make the perfect presents for anyone back home too – if you can manage not to eat them that is!
Beer lovers will be just as impressed too – back in the 12th century, monks in abbeys used to brew and distribute beer, known today as Trappist beer. Today, there are only ten monasteries that brew trappist beer in the world – six of them being in Belgium! Head on a beer tasting tour, with an abundance of different flavours to try and varying alcohol volumes – we’ll say cheers to that!
For a truly unique culinary experience, you can choose to discover Brussels’ gastronomy via a one-off tram journey – yes, you heard that right!
Get comfortable in your tram seat as you begin to travel through the heart of Brussels’ city centre, all the while being served delectable tasting menus that will drive your taste buds wild!
The Tram Experience has been running in Brussels for over a decade now, and is a great way to see so much of the city, as well as tucking in to some top-notch grub. You’ll be presented with six or seven course menus that have even been designed by renowned local chefs, showcasing the best in contemporary Belgian cuisine. What could be better? All aboard!
