A gem of a beach
Maxwell Beach more than holds its own among its scenic south-coast neighbours, offering a chilled and slow-paced vibe. It really is one of the best destinations if you want a holiday with plenty of peace and quiet.
Like many of the beaches along the coast of Barbados, Maxwell has soft, white sand that’s just impossible to resist for relaxation. You can also hire sun loungers if you prefer to recline in style. Palm trees dotted along the beach create the backdrop to enjoy a romantic picnic on the sand. Alternatively, settle down at the wooden tables for lunch with a view. There are also several restaurants, and while you’re there you can also browse some of the souvenir stalls.
Just dive in
The water quality you’ll enjoy during a Maxwell holiday is second to none. Vibrant azure in colour, the sea is impossibly clear and usually very calm. This makes it perfect for swimming, especially for children. Snorkelling is possible but be aware that the water can get a bit choppy when jet skis pass by or when the waves pick up. When the sea does get a bit rougher, it’s a surfer’s paradise, with these conditions also being ideal for windsurfing.
You don’t need to be a pro with a surfboard to enjoy the sea though, as you can also enjoy banana boat rides and sail along the water on a Hobie Cat (a small catamaran-like boat).
Shop at nearby St Lawrence Gap
It’s just a five-minute drive or 15-minute walk from Maxwell to St Lawrence Gap, or ‘The Gap’, as it’s referred to by the locals. This bustling area is famous for its shopping, with Chattel House Shopping Village being incredibly popular. This colourful collection of shops sell a range of souvenirs, jewellery, clothing and much more besides.
At night the area simply comes alive, when bars play host to live music and cocktails keep flowing into the early hours. Traditional Barbadian street food is available from vendors, and there are many restaurants to choose from for a delicious sit-down evening meal. It’s not just local food being served up either, with Mexican, Chinese, Brazilian and Thai being just some of the cuisines on offer.
Delve into the historic Bridgetown
Bridgetown is Barbados’ lively capital and you can discover its attractions and atmosphere in less than a 25-minute drive west. This port city has a wealth of history to explore within its streets, with beautiful colonial buildings lining many of them. Must-visits include George Washington House, the Barbados Museum and Parliament Buildings. Downtown Bridgetown is home to Cheapside Market where you can rub shoulders with the friendly locals and pick up all sorts of fresh produce, books and crafted items.
There are of course more sandy stretches here, so you could decide to simply take a walk along the beach and soak up the views and laidback atmosphere. Carlisle Bay is a popular beach and its marine park offers the chance to go scuba diving.
