These chilled-out beachside tavernas are an ideal location to watch the sun slowly disappear into the horizon and many offer live Greek music as you dine.
For more excitement, dust off your dancing shoes and head over to Vigli restaurant for an evening of traditional Greek entertainment. Overlooking the harbour, the hilltop restaurant offers some of the best views of the resort, serving faultless Greek cuisine and local wines.
For wilder nights out, the capital, Thassos Town, is just a 15 minute drive away, where you’ll find a good selection of cocktail bars and clubs. You’ll also be able to find livelier bars with later opening hours in the neighbouring resort of Skala Potamia, a 30-minute walk down the coast.
Explore the island
The entire island can be covered in a matter of days and the moderately sized, almost perfectly circular, piece of land has a good-quality ring road running for a distance of about 95 kilometres. You can easily hire a car or 4×4 and take your time beach-hopping and uncovering local Greek treasures.
The hillside villages of Potamia and Panagia are nearby and offer plenty of photo opportunities along the small pretty streets and charming old buildings.
As well as picturesque beaches, Thassos offers vast mountain terrain covered in trails, which can be attempted on foot or bike. Experience the tranquil surroundings punctuated by chirping birds and babbling brooks, all surrounded by a pine forest with fine views of the island.
Snorkel in the Aegean
Snorkelling conditions are excellent in Thassos and there are many good places around the island to put on your flippers and explore the seabed. Complete with a rich marine life and warm, clear water, the coast of Thassos is perfect for both the experienced practitioner and the total novice.
It’s possible to hire snorkelling equipment from one of the water activity centres, where staff will gladly give you some tips for great spots to visit, while boat trips offer underwater diving opportunities further out at sea.
Head a little further south to the peninsula of Alyki and you’ll find a sunken quarry whose carved rocks are visible under the water’s surface. Trypiti Beach hides a secret cove, and if you can find it, Salonikios Beach – only accessable via dirt road or boat – is an isolated, idyllic spot to snorkel or just relax.
