After Skala was flattened by an Earthquake in 1953, the traditional town was rebuilt with modern amenities resulting in a great tourist destination, however there are still old village ruins that can be seen giving you an insight into traditional Skala. Head to the outskirts of town to see the remains of an original Roman Villa – you can go inside and appreciate the old architecture and mosaic floors.Â
With such great countryside, Skala is prime for hikers with coastal paths that offer panoramic views of the Ionian Sea and neighbouring resort Poros. Although, if catching the bus is more your cup of tea, you can get a direct bus from Skala to Kefalonia’s capital, Argostoli, and spend the day exploring the beautiful historic architecture here, you’ll also find plenty of shops and restaurants here for a jam-packed day trip.
Speaking of restaurants, Skala is home to some superb local tavernas serving traditional dishes that will delight. There’s a mix of restaurants offering al fresco dining, laid-back atmospheres, and wine from the local vineyards.
Skala is the largest resort in southern Kefalonia and has one of the best Blue Flag beaches on the island.
