Taking It Back

The city of Verona is more than 2,000 years old, so history buffs can be sure to find an abundance of sights to explore during their time in this gorgeous city. UNESCO has actually declared the city a World Heritage site as a whole so that tells you everything you need to know! One of the most famous of the historical sites is the Verona Arena, which happens to be the third largest Roman amphitheatre in Italy. It’s quite similar to the Colosseum in Rome and has a capacity of a whopping 30,000 spectators.

Another spot that cannot be missed during your trip here is Juliet’s Balcony. Made famous by Shakespeare’s play, Romeo and Juliet, and later featured in movies like Letters to Juliet, if you haven’t been here on your Verona holiday, have you even been to Verona?! If you haven’t seen Letters to Juliet, Amanda Seyfried’s character discovers that the walls below Juliet’s Balcony hold letters from women and men all over the world, writing to Juliet for love advice. A group of local women, who call themselves Juliet’s secretaries, then write back to everyone giving advice, as though they were Juliet. But, it’s not all for the big screen, because this actually happens in real life! You’ll likely see many letters or notes popped on the wall during your visit, or maybe even catch a glimpse of Juliet’s secretaries.

Shop In Style

It’s no surprise that Italy has made a name for itself in the fashion world thanks to many big-name fashion houses originating here, but you don’t need to go to one of the larger cities to experience the very best of fashion. If you’re not up for spending the big bucks, the Adigeo shopping centre is a great place to visit. You’ll find more than 130 stores here with both Italian and international brands.

There’s also a handful of affordable shops on Via Mazzini, alongside some of the beautiful designer stores. Via Mazzini is the most popular shopping street of Verona, it has shiny marbled walkways and sparkling shop windows which line the way between Piazza delle Erbe and Piazza Bra. On this busy, pedestrianised street, you’ll find all major Italian designers including the high-end Versace, Dolce & Gabbana and Louis Vuitton.

Verona After Dark

Whether you’re craving a laid-back evening in Verona or want something more lively, you’ll have no problem finding the perfect spot as night falls on this exciting city. Piazza Bra is home to a whole host of pavement bars which are perfect for grabbing a drink and watching the world go by. For the people watchers among us (pretty much everyone, right?!) Piazza delle Erbe is another fantastic spot to head to. Here you’ll find an array of bars and cafes lining the square, which all offer laid-back vibes for your evening tipple.

If you’re raring to go and want to take it up a notch, there’s no better place for a lively atmosphere than at the Verona Arena. Famous opera performances like Carmen, Aida, Turandot and Nabucco take place throughout the summer months, and it’s best to book tickets in advance. For a memorable experience, we recommend sitting higher up on the Roman stone steps to get a view across the arena.

Explore Italy

One of the great things about a city break to Verona is that you don’t need to stay in one place for the full duration of your holiday. Thanks to its location, Verona is in close proximity to Venice, Milan and Lake Garda, meaning you can explore even further afield. One of the best ways to get around is by using the well-established train system. You’ll find Verona’s train station at the top of Piazzale Porta Nuova, a 20-minute walk from the city centre.

From the train station, Northern Italy is your oyster! It takes around an hour and 20 minutes to get to Milan, which is another fabulous city if you’ve got deep pockets and want to spend some Euros on the best fashion you can get your hands on. Venice is an hour and 45 minutes away, so you can be sipping espressos in St Mark’s Square or floating along the Grand Canal in no time. For a bit of a change of scenery, why not plan a visit to Lake Garda? In 20 minutes, you can be enjoying utter tranquillity and calm, which is a change of pace compared to the city! Dip your toes in the water and relax around the edge of the lake before heading back to the hustle and bustle.
