Go skiing
With long periods of snowfall and perfect weather, there’s no better place to ski than on Muonio holidays. You have the choice of two resorts: Ski Resort Olos and Ski Resort Pallas. Olos is situated close to the Pallas-Yllästunturi National Park. You can try both downhill and cross-country skiing. It has ten slopes and four lifts, and tends to be quieter than other skiing areas. There’s also a 250km network of cross-country tracks where you can see sights such as the Olostunturi Fell, Lake Särkijärvi and Lake Jerisjärvi. Pallas has nine slopes on offer too. One of the biggest events of Muonio’s calendar is the Lapponia Cross-Country Skiing Race. It’s a competitive track across challenging terrain, and much loved by locals and visitors alike.
Explore the Pallas-Yllästunturi national park
The highlight of any holidays to Muonio is exploring the Pallas-Yllästunturi National Park. It’s the country’s most popular park and is only 20 minutes from Muonio. During the winter, head out on cross-country skis to explore the 500km of tracks. There’s also 350km of hiking trails to enjoy which you can walk during the summer or snowshoe in the winter. If you’re after a real hiking holiday, the Hetta-Pallas trail takes four days to complete and leads you through the park’s most stunning scenery. The park is home to plenty of wildlife too. You might spot reindeer, arctic hares and even the odd brown bear. If you choose to stay in the park, you’re in the perfect place to catch the mysterious northern lights.
Enjoy the water
Muonio may not seem like a water-based holiday destination but the multiple lakes surrounding the town are great for swimming, canoeing and rafting. During the summer, you can swim in the clear waters of Lake Muoniojärvi or kayak or canoe down the Muonio River. If you’re keen on fishing, head to Roach Lake (Särkijärvi) or Lake Jerisjärvi. For an adrenaline-racing experience, try your hand at white-water rafting on the Muonio River. You’ll get to experience some fast and furious rapids as you paddle down the river – so don’t expect to stay dry! It’s an activity that’s better suited to summer trips to the town.
Hike to Särkitunuri Fell
One of Muonio’s top attractions is the beautiful Särkitunturi Fell. At the top you’ll find a placid lake, a shelter and some facilities. From the top of the Fell, you can see across Pallas and the national park – giving you one of the most sought-after views in the whole of Finland. It’s easily the best viewing platform in the region, so make sure you put aside time to visit during your holidays to Muonio, Lapland. During the warmer months, it’s a simple walk to the top and accessible for young children. Once the snow has fallen, it’s better to take a snowmobile tour or the cross-country skiing trails.
See the northern lights
Live out a lifelong dream and watch the northern lights dance their way across Lapland’s inky black sky. While you can’t guarantee that you’ll see the dazzling display, the lack of light pollution in Muonio gives you a better chance than in other parts of the country. Some hotels offer wake up calls too, so look out for this feature when you’re booking your hotel. If staff or guests see the northern lights, they’ll let you know – regardless of what time it is! The northern lights tend to appear around 200 times a year, so you’ve got good chances of seeing this heavenly show. You can usually see the northern lights from September onwards, though once the evenings draw in, your chances are even better.
Whether you’re in search of a magical winter wonderland or an action-packed holiday, Muonio is the perfect destination. Ski through gorgeous landscapes or whiz down tracks covered in fresh snow. Sip warm drinks and wait for the northern lights to ebb and flow across the dark night sky. Don’t forget to visit the reindeer and pop in to see Father Christmas!
