The city of angels

Los Angeles, known as the City of Angels, or just LA, offers a veritable cornucopia of activities. You could see the sights of Hollywood, take the Walk of Fame or visit the Natural History Museum. If you like the wind on your face then rent a surfboard and catch the waves at Zuma Beach, Malibu or just relax and soak up the Californian sun on the more secluded El Matador Beach, also near Malibu.

However, for the ultimate in family holidays, it has to be the magical Walt Disney World Resort, with its 15 enchanted lands. Everything you will need is on-site – stay in one of the resort hotels, eat and drink at the numerous restaurants and cafes, all while having great fun.

I left my heart in San Francisco

San Francisco is a city where one visit is never enough, you will want to go back. Start your holiday on Nob Hill and take the cable car to Fisherman’s Wharf – and then do it again – it’s so much fun.

You can stop at Fisherman’s Wharf for lunch – seafood of course – but leave time to explore the adjacent Anchorage Square, a lively area with shopping and entertainment.

Then do some time in Alcatraz, the former military fort and maximum security prison which once housed the notorious Al Capone and Machine Gun Kelly. Night tours are particularly atmospheric. The short ferry journey to the island also gives you a great view of the Golden Gate Bridge. Leave time to visit San Francisco’s Chinatown for the ultimate in Chinese cuisine.

The sunshine state

Many people travelling to America will do so for the range of film-inspired theme parks, including Walt Disney World Resort, Epcot and Universal Orlando. Together they make Florida one of the USA’s top holiday destinations. However, the beauty of Florida truly lies in the contrast of its visitor attractions.

The Everglades National Park, a large subtropical wilderness, while rightly famous for its alligators has so much more to offer. There are over 40 species of mammals which inhabit the park. Watch out for the shy cottontail, river otter, raccoon, and the occasional bobcat. There are a number of boat trips and ranger guided tours available.

The kids will love the Kennedy Space Centre at Cape Canaveral, about an hour’s drive from Orlando. It’s such an exciting and inspiring place to see. With the visitor centre divided into mission zones, it’s easy to get round without missing any of the attractions.
