There’s 3 outdoor infinity pools that look out over the ocean and a huge sun terrace filled with sun loungers and palm trees – plus there’s a shallow, child-friendly pool too. Funchal is the culture-filled capital of Madeira and is an incredibly popular resort for many reasons. The dining, the views and the bar scene are some of the main attractions of Funchal, but the all-year-round warm climate is definitely the selling point. The temperatures never tend to drop below 20℃ and can almost hit 30℃ in the peak summer months, making it a great place to banish any winter blues.
Exploring the Old Town of Funchal is a great day out full of sites, treats and shopping. You’ll actually find that most of Funchal’s restaurants are located in the Old Town and there are some seriously nice eateries serving great fresh food. Lots of dishes take Portuguese cuisine and add a Mediterranean twist resulting in some divine flavours. The local market is a great place to pick up exotic flowers and fresh fruits and veggies, and whilst you’re wandering the narrow streets be sure to keep an eye out for the painted doors project – this is simply what it says, doors that have been painted by the local people. The creativity of this really brings the street to life.
Taking a ride on the monte cable Car is another Funchal must-do. It’s a 15 minute trip up the mountain providing jaw-dropping views of the city and its surroundings. Once you’re in Monte there’s plenty of sights to see, including the Botanical gardens of Madeira, but even if you only take the cable car for the views, it’s certainly worth it!
The capital of Madeira is nestled on the island's south coast, and is a lively and picturesque place to enjoy your holiday. It has a top dining and bar scene, a marina and pebbled beach plus you can take the cable car up to Monte for stunning vistas.
