Avant-garde architecture

It may be less known than its sister Spanish cities in the south, but Bilbao is certainly no less impressive. In the beating heart of Basque Country, prepare to be blown away as you gaze into the future at the Guggenheim, before feeling like you’ve stepped back in time in the Old Town. Bilbao offers the best of both worlds!

Bilbao boasts so much in terms of iconic buildings and amazing art – you simply can’t fail to be impressed here.

The most iconic structure in this city is by far the great and glorious Guggenheim Museum – not only is it home to one of the best modern art collections in Europe, the building itself is an incredible piece of art within its own right.

It’s an absolute must visit when in Bilbao – you’d never believe it was built around 20 years ago, looking from the outside you’d sooner believe it had just fallen from outer space! Its impressive exterior is only a glimpse into the astounding artwork held within, with prominent contemporary works on display at every turn.

If you thought that was the only innovative bit of architecture here you’d be mistaken, with Bilbao’s Old Quarter serving up no less-impressive scenes. Santiago Cathedral is Bilbao’s oldest building and you certainly won’t be able to miss it, thanks to its striking tower and Gothic look.

Nearby is the Begona Basilica, where legend has it, the Virgin Mary appeared at the beginning of the 16th century. Seeing these legendary buildings with your own eyes have you falling in love with this city in no time.

Big on flavour

They’re passionate about gastronomy in Bilbao, with charming streets packed full of restaurant after restaurant serving fresh, wholesome food. Whether you’re after light bites or a hearty Spanish paella, allow your tastebuds to head on a journey of their own, trying one tempting mouthful after another.

There’s one main item on the menu in this city – and that’s pintxos, Northern Spain’s version of tapas – and boy, are they tasty! These finger foods are quintessential Basque snacks, and are the perfect pairment to a glass (or two!) of wine. Tuck into the likes of fresh, crusty bread topped with cheese and ham, or opt for mini Spanish omlettes instead. Can’t choose? Order them both!

Marvellous markets

Is there a better way to discover a whole new city than by browsing everything on offer in their local market? We think not! And you get plenty of chance to do that in this beautiful city.

Mercado de la Ribera Market was established in 1929 and covers a whopping 10,000 square metres, giving it the title of largest indoor market in Europe!

You’ll find this enchanting space in the heart of the Old Town, where you’ll find stall after stall selling everything from local, fresh produce to handcrafted gifts and souvenirs. The buzz continues just down the road at Plaza Nueva Square – one of the main social hubs of the city.

Here you’ll discover more markets, shops, bars, restaurants and cafes all culminating to create a space full of life and fascinating culture. With live acts and performances during the day, you simply have to stop here to sit back and soak up the atmosphere.
