What’s the weather like in Thassos?
Though Thassos sits in the North Aegean Sea, it stands apart from other Greek island destinations in that its weather is a little milder in both summer and winter. But don’t be fooled – the summers still see more than ample heat and the winter is far from freezing, and don’t even get us started on the shoulder seasons.
Spring and summer are a comfortable in-between that, yes, see a little more rainfall than other Greek islands, but not like we’re used to in the UK. Wet weather here means a few days of rain, and otherwise it’s all sunshine, all the time. Not bad for holiday fodder, if we do say so ourselves.
Spring
Spring is arguably one of the best times to visit Thassos, as the temperatures will have spiked and the scenery is looking particularly lush.
Thassos is known as one of Greece‘s less-developed islands, so its natural landscape is still abundant with trees that grow right up to the coastline. In the spring, the plants and trees will be out in full, making walks and stints at the beach that much nicer.
In terms of weather, the temperatures begin to rise in March to around 13°C, and reach the low-20s in May. You’re more likely to encounter a little bit of rain in the spring, but it’s minimal compared to wet weather in the UK.
Once night falls, it can still get a little chilly in Thassos, so you’d be wise to bring a couple of extra layers just in case.
Summer
Summer is without a doubt the high season in Thassos. The shops and restaurants are in full swing, and this is due mostly to the fact that the weather is at its best.
In Thassos, summers are quite mild compared to elsewhere around the Greek islands, as the island is so close to the Greek mainland that it’s often sheltered from winds. This can mean that humidity in Thassos is regularly high, as there isn’t a breeze to blow it away.
The summer weather in Thassos starts in the low-20s come June, and doesn’t generally hit above the 30s, even in August when the heat peaks. That said, the sea temperature is still delightfully warm, so visits to the beach are that much more enticing.
Autumn
Following suit with other destinations in the Mediterranean, autumn is part of Thassos’ shoulder season, which means it sits on the end of high season and the start of low.
Even though activities are starting to wind down, the weather in autumn is still comfortably warm, with temperatures in September still resting around 25°C, and gradually decreasing to the mid-teens in November.
Autumn also sees an increase in rainfall, and at night the temperatures are even lower, getting down below 10°C. However, sunshine hours are close to those of spring, making this a comparable season to visit if you want to miss the crowds but still have warm enough weather to get out and about.
Winter
Compared to other Greek islands like Mykonos and Santorini, Thassos experiences particularly mild winter weather. Though it doesn’t really snow, the temperatures get down to 11°C during the day, and slightly lower at night. Rainfall is at its height, which isn’t saying much, as rainfall here is generally low as it is.
For the most part, the sun is still shining, though not for very long per day. The winter is still a pleasant time to stroll around town or through the island’s natural landscape, though.
