Some special places in the world seem to whisk you away to a whole other planet! Take a look at some of our favourites, from twinkling underground rivers in Mexico to pink salt lakes in Spain. Prepare to crave a holiday…
Vatnajökull, Iceland
Step into a vast, breathtaking winter wonderland at the Vatnajökull glacier in Iceland. There’s a real magical feel in this country – the scenery is so dramatic and beautiful everywhere you go. A visit to Vatnajökull will see you hike over the second-largest ice cap in Europe and be met with sweeping views of rugged icy landscapes as far as the eye can see. With a surface area of around 8,000 square kilometres, you could spend days exploring this spectacular natural wonder.
Ouzoud Falls, Morocco
Morocco is home to so many amazing places, from the Sahara Desert to the Atlas Mountains. One of our favourite spots to visit, resembling something straight out of a movie scene, is Ouzoud Falls. These cascading waterfalls are the second tallest in Africa and look just perfect twinkling in the sunlight, surrounded by luscious greenery. Be sure to bring your camera when you visit, and don’t forget to keep an eye out for the Ouzoud monkeys – they can be a bit cheeky when they want to be!
Rio Secreto, Mexico
When you go on a holiday to Mexico, one thing’s for sure – you’ll never be bored. There’s so much to do, and one of our favourites is visiting the stunning cenotes. These natural, deep-water wells and mazes of underground rivers make for a totally fascinating holiday experience. One of the most famous subterranean rivers is the Rio Secreto, flowing through a crystal cave and giving tourists the chance to swim, walk and wade their way through perfectly clear waters. It’s a yes from us!
Pamukkale, Turkey
This quaint and beautiful town in Turkey is a must-visit for those who love all things weird and wonderful. It’s known for its milky-white thermal waters that run through a huddle of white hillside terraces. They’re so distinctive, and really are like something out of a fantasy film. The Turkish word ‘Pamukkale’ translates to mean ‘cotton castle’, which makes the whole place seem even more magical!
Glowing Beach, Maldives
The beaches in the Maldives are a spectacle in themselves, so prepare to be completely blown away by this mystical and vibrant bay on Vaadhoo Island. The gentle waves that lap the shore are filled with tiny microorganisms that light up when they come into contact with the surface of the water, creating a dazzling glow that looks almost like an optical illusion. If you want to see this incredible phenomenon for yourself, the best time to visit is between June and October.
Seven Coloured Earths, Mauritius
Mauritius is another destination that’s totally tropical and filled with natural wonders. One of the most popular tourist attractions is the mind-boggling Seven Coloured Earths, a rare geological formation of sand dunes created by an unusual confluence of volcanic activity. The way these psychedelic sand dunes roll means there could be any combination of the seven striking colours on show at any time. It’s completely intriguing and unlike any other holiday attraction!
Laguna Salada de Torrevieja, Spain
Another place that’s all about the colour is the Laguna Salada de Torrevieja in Valencia. This stunning pink lake is a sight to behold. It’s one of the largest and saltiest lakes in Europe, and gets its bright, rosy hue from a range of microorganisms that live in the water. Please note that swimming isn’t allowed in the lake, but it’s beautiful to simply walk around thanks to the bubblegum pink shores. Be sure to snap plenty of pics on your visit!
Plitvice Lakes National Park, Croatia
There are endless beauty spots we could have chosen from Croatia – it’s simply full of natural wonders! However, we think the Plitvice Lakes National Park deserves a special mention. Pretty, wooden trails weave their way through a wonderland of colourful greenery and tumbling waterfalls, making you feel like you’re wandering through a fairytale forest. Naturally, the park can get pretty busy in peak months, but the scenery has such a wow-factor that it’s worth a visit regardless!
Blue Grotto, Italy
The Blue Grotto, a sea cave hidden away off the coast of Capri, traps the sun in a way that lights the whole cavern up a beautiful bright blue. The cave is accessible only by rowing boats and is popular among tourists from all over the world, but it is said that in the past it was considered forbidden as folk believed it was inhabited by witches and monsters. Interested in seeing for yourself if there’s an air of mystery about the Blue Grotto? Make Italy your next holiday destination!
The Pitons, St Lucia
Finally on our list of otherworldly wonders, we have the Pitons in St Lucia. These two volcanic peaks make you feel like you’ve stepped into a scene from Moana, with fuzzy green mountain faces overlooking twinkling blue waves. It’s the Caribbean scene of dreams! You can opt to get up close to these mountainous peaks on a tropical hike, or you could admire them from afar on a chilled-out catamaran cruise. However you discover the Pitons, prepare to be wowed – they’re spectacular!
