The Dominican Republic’s Coconut Coast dominates in its offering of adults-only All Inclusive resorts, with Bavaro holidays being prime couples’ chillout territory. We cover which hotels in this area, and the rest of this beautiful Caribbean country, come out tops if you want some grown-up time with your loved one, or to get married without a little one in sight.
Riu Palace Macao Hotel, Bavaro
Right on Arena Gorda beach, a stay at this hotel means you can windsurf and kayak, or simply lounge by the sea. Then retire to Riu Palace Macao Hotel’s palm tree-lined grounds and make use of the three peaceful pools with a swim-up bar and seats in the water, or recline on a four-poster Balinese daybed.
The choice of five restaurants will delight you, from a fusion restaurant where you can dine with your toes in the sand to a stylish Japanese eatert looking out onto the sea. There’s even a Pacha nightclub at the hotel! Or if you prefer nights a bit more chilled, watch the entertainment at Copacabana amphitheatre. One of the only things you have to pay extra for is massages and Jacuzzi® time at the Renova Spa – or for a little bit of indulgence in your own private space, book a suite with its own Jacuzzi®.
Catalonia Royal Bavaro, Bavaro
If sitting in Catalonia Royal Bavaro’s infinity pool looking out over the white sand beach isn’t enough, get out onto the private sands to drink at the cocktail bar and dance at the weekly beach party. There’s a second pool with a whirlpool bath and the open-air theatre lays on brilliant shows, or you can head to the mini casino and disco.
Organised activities here range from snorkelling and scuba diving to an introductory golf lesson. Or go for a dunk in the Turkish bath and have a couple’s massage at the sea-view spa, for an extra fee. As well as having six places to eat, you get to use all the facilities of the neighbouring Catalonia Bavaro, doubling your restaurant options.
Excellence El Carmen, Uvero Alto, Punta Cana
You might not believe it, but there are 23 pools at Excellence El Carmen, totaling 79,000 square feet! Book a ground floor suite and you’ll either get direct access to a pool or one all to yourself. There’s also 12 restaurants and 16 bars for you to explore – all as well as the theatre, beach, sports programme, piano and disco bars, among many more.
Dining sees a buffet restaurant, eight a la cartes, a tapas place and takeaways that serve up wood-fired pizza. And to work off some dinner, head to the 4,000 square feet fitness centre, or do some circuits on the outdoor fitness trail. If you need a bit of motivation, you can even try classes in scuba diving, dance and yoga.
Luxury Bahia Principe Bouganville, La Romana
For a peaceful base with a busy hub for facilities nearby, choose Luxury Bahia Principe Bouganville. You’ll be staying in the adults-only section of the hotel with a reserved VIP section of Santana Beach, but can use the Grand Bahia Principe La Romana’s lake-style pool, restaurants and activities. Dine at gourmet a la carte restaurants, a garden grill or buffet place and use the sports facilities for things like tennis, football and volleyball.
Go for an oceanfront junior suite and you’ll also get to dine at a buffet restaurant reserved for suite guests, as well as take a dip in the suites’ private pool. Plus, wherever you choose to relax, you’ll benefit from beach and poolside service.
Secrets Royal Beach Punta Cana, Bavaro
The pool lazily ambles through the grounds at Secrets Royal Beach Punta Cana, just as you can on your relaxing All Inclusive adults only holiday. As well as pool areas for swimming and soaking, there are also activity zones for things like aqua aerobics, plus two swim-up bars. Rooms come with private whirlpools and 24/7 room service as standard, or you can upgrade to a swim-up junior suite.
The hotel’s right on Bavaro beach and has heaps of restaurants and bars shared with its two sister hotels, as well as occasional movies on the beach. You can also dine privately on the beach, or in the hotel’s Wine Cellar for an extra fee. Other inclusive activities cover watersports, Spanish lessons and classes in the fitness centre.
