Riu Tequila
This affordable getaway will help you see that tequila can be so much more than a drink. Riu Tequila is found in sunny Playacar, the smaller and more serene answer to the vibrancy of Cancun. It has plenty to offer, with two pools and beach access for any who choose to make the leisurely five minute stroll.
There’s a complimentary shuttle to ferry you back and forth from that sumptuous sand too though, and with the pool scene at Riu Tequila offering a gorgeous tropical swim-up bar, you can see why this place has your relaxation in mind.
Rooms themselves are well decorated and decently spacious, while come mealtimes you’ve got the option of four restaurants to choose from. Dinners are laid-back here, with a la carte dining often the norm as you tuck into flavours from Mexico and Asia alike.
Meanwhile, if the call of the sea is too strong to ignore, it’s yours, thanks to catamaran sailing classes and body-boarding adventures.

Gran Bahia Principe Coba
This is perhaps one of the cheapest ways to enjoy the plush Riviera Maya. You’ll find it on a private beach, with its spacious rooms offering you a cosy place to relax between your outings.
Free transport runs day by day to get you back and forth from nearby attractions, especially the main promenade. That said, there’s lots to do within the hotel grounds too.
Every Thursday night is fiesta night, with all the colour and music that comes with it, but there’s plenty to do at live music and karaoke nights too.
For the kids, not only do they get their own pool, but an entire waterpark to play in, and that’s before you consider that this area’s well known for the natural turtle population you might chance upon.
Best of all, mealtimes take their cues from all corners. Mexican and Italian dishes in one venue are complemented by fresh seafood and Japanese dishes in other areas, giving a smile to even the pickiest eaters.

That said, Riu Caribe Hotel has three pools with their own sun-trap terraces to choose from, together with dining option that offers tacos and tortillas or freshly sizzled steaks fresh from the steakhouse.
There’s also an Asian option for those of you seeking some flavours from the East.
Night time is the right time at this hotel though, thanks to some fantastic nightlife options. You needn’t strictly wait until after dark thanks to the 24 hour sports bar, which shows football matches on big screens while keeping the pints pouring.
Nonetheless, an evening spent in the classy lounge bar sipping a mojito or three definitely adds some distinction to your evenings out. And while the nightlife of Cancun is a short cab ride away, the live music performances and dance numbers performed at the hotel could well captivate you too much to see you leave.
What’s more, sea views are enjoyed both night and day at Riu Caribe Hotel, so if you’ve the chance to, definitely splash out a little extra to bag yourself a balcony.

While you’re right on the beach of Playacar here, this hotel is also just a 15-minute cab ride from the beloved massive shopping complexes of Playa del Carmen. That means you’re nicely secluded but not entirely out of the action, and the hotel itself embodies that wonderfully.
You’ll have the option to make the most of the beach here. There’s volleyball and scuba diving classes to enjoy, or you can leap onto a kayak or catamaran to head out into the open sea and take in the sights.
Back on dry land though, Riu Playacar’s also competing for your attention thanks to its live music and plays. Those kick off at 10PM every night, or you can step over the road to ClubHotel Riu Tequila for dancing at the disco.
